Academy Concerts at Central Presbyterian presents the Academy String Quartet in a program of Haydn and Schubert, along with some other tasty morsels – including holiday music. Haydn’s Op.76 #4 is one of his most popular quartets, and due to the rising melody at its beginning has been nick-named the “Sunrise” quartet. A rarely-performed early quartet of Schubert, in E flat major, is a sweet and charming companion to the more energetic Haydn work. Rhosymedre is a Welsh hymn tune elaborated by Ralph Vaughan Williams into an organ prelude; Kenneth Abeling has made a quartet arrangement of this lovely, short piece. There will be Christmas-related music by Handel and Corelli, and a delicious but decidedly un-Christmassy tango. Free admission; donations welcome.
