 Safety, Nutrition & Wellness

In this course, WQED’s Super Teachers share a Safety, Nutrition, and Wellness curriculum that explores diverse topics – such as trying new foods, practicing fire safety, and learning the importance of brushing your teeth – through Sesame Street, Arthur, and other PBS shows. The curriculum, based on Pennsylvania’s State Standards, gives early childhood providers a month-by-month calendar with links to videos, printables, and games. In addition, learn how to use My Street, Sesame Workshop’s social network, to share wellness video assets with your co-teachers.

Intended Audience: Head Start teachers; administrators; Pre-K, kindergarten and Grade 1 teachers; paraprofessionals; consultants; and independent early childcare providers.

 

PBS Tools 101

PBS is a treasure trove of digital and non-digital resources for educators. WQED Education Department staff or Super Teachers provide a comprehensive overview of the most useful and well-liked PBS programs and media tools. Explore the full range of PBS materials on literacy, numeracy, and social and emotional wellness in this fast-paced session that integrates games with books, apps, and videos, while connecting home to school and back. You’ll be amazed and well-equipped to harvest every PBS tool! In addition, learn how to use PBS KIDS Island, a free tracking system for early literacy, and WQED’s PBS Learning Media. Find out what’s new and explore the many ways in which PBS programming naturally embeds best practices and rich content into a broad range of programs. PBS materials for parents, students and teachers will be provided.

Intended Audience: Early childhood teachers; Head Start teachers; Pre-K, Kindergarten and Grade 1 teachers; coaches; administrators; consultants; and parents.

Intended Audience: 4th – 8th grade teachers; administrators; consultants; and parents. This session will feature STEM and/or ARTS content for upper grade levels.

 

Math 4 U

Engage early learners in interactive math practices based on the Common Core Standards as well as the PBS Math Framework used across the nation as part of Ready to Learn. WQED Super Teachers demonstrate classroom use of PBS programs for specialized mathematics skill-building and share a Math curriculum built on themes such as counting, shapes, patterns and much more. The curriculum provides links to videos, printables, and games. Featuring PBS’s newest show, Peg+Cat and the musical, mathematical strategies within this TV show. Learn how to use Dino Train, Curious George, Sesame Workshop, and WQED’s PBS Lab. PBS materials for teachers, parents, and students will be provided.

Social & Emotional Learning

Social and Emotional Learning for young children might be one of our greatest challenges. WQED uses its child-engaging media assets to demonstrate to children how to regulate one’s emotions to handle stress, control impulses, persevere in overcoming obstacles, express emotions effectively, empathize with others, and recognize and appreciate individual differences. Learn techniques, drawn from Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and other PBS programs, to assist children in handling disappointment, anger, and conflict. Learn how to use My Street, and WQED’s PBS Learning Media to share video assets, clips, songs with your children. PBS materials for teachers, parents and students will be provided.

Full STEAM Ahead with PBS

Engage early learners in interactive science and engineering practices based on the Common Core Standards as well as the PBS Math Framework used across the nation as part of Ready to Learn. WQED Super Teachers demonstrate science, physics, literacy, arts and math in accessible ways and through case studies, games, apps and more. Learn how to use Curious George, Cat In The Hat Knows a lot About That, Peep and the Big Wide World, Sid The Science Kid, and PBS’s newest show, Peg+Cat. PBS materials for teachers, parents, and students will be provided.

Intended Audience: Head Start teachers; STEM and arts coaches; administrators; supervisors; Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grade 1 teachers; and STEM and arts consultants.

 

Social Studies with PBS

Explore how children can learn about their community, cultures and the world around them without ever leaving the classroom using PBS Digital Assets. Video clips from Sesame Street and PBS Learning Media of real children and families from other countries will help children to understand this multicultural world. The Wild Kratts help children imagine traveling back in time and history! Learn how to incorporate Spanish into the early childhood setting with Oh Noah!, the voting process with Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and geography with Fizzy’s Lunch Lab. Make Social Studies lessons, which can often times be abstract concepts, come to life with help from PBS. PBS materials for teachers, parents and students will be provided.

Join the WQED education team as we explore the unique language and literacy resources that can be found in both PBS and WQED programing.
