Writers Contest

Hello Writers Contest fans! The 2023 "Write My Future" Writers Contest will open January 4th 2023. The deadline to enter will be March 31st 2023

Do you have a child with a great idea for a story about their future? We cannot wait to read it! This is their chance to write and illustrate their own masterpiece, and enter to win cool prizes!

Partnering with WQED this year are The City of Pittsburgh and the Amelia Miles Foundation. The contest is for student’s kindergarten- 3rd grade. The theme is “Write My Future.” We want children to use their imagination to inspire a story where they are the star and write about where they see themselves in the future. Maybe they are an astronaut visiting Mars, or maybe they are the first female President of the United States. It is their future and they can be anything they want to be.

One significant change to the contest this year is that stories will not be returned. If your child wants their story returned, they will have to include a self-addressed envelope with the appropriate postage. Please encourage your child to submit a copy.

The contest will run from January 4 through March 31, 2022.

We will choose a first, second and third place winner along with an honorable mention story for each grade, and there will be a Reader’s Choice Award. So show us your creativity and get ready for …Write My Future!

If you have any questions please contact Michelle Imler at mimler@wqed.org

We spoke with professional illustrator and WQED Cartoon Academy's Joe Wos, who showed us the importance of illustrations in stories!

Ms. Tiffany from Butler Area Public Library will teach us the basics of writing a story!

There are so many choices of what you can be and what you can do in the future! So what will you be…a construction worker, a ballerina, or a space explorer? If you are having trouble thinking about what you want to be in the future, take a look at some of the books below and they may help to get your creativity moving.
