WHAT:
WQED Multimedia is proud to air “Beyond the Canvas: The Carnegie International,” a 30-minute documentary tracing the history of Carnegie Museum of Art’s Carnegie International exhibition series and introducing viewers to three contemporary artists whose work was included in the most recent iteration, the 58th: Njaimeh Njie, Tishan Hsu and James YaYa Hough—artists’ whose multimedia work exemplifies our changing world and its challenges.
The Carnegie International is the longest-running North American exhibition of international art. It was created by steel titan and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1896 to make Pittsburgh “as famous for art as it is now for steel.” Carnegie established the annual survey exhibition of art from which the museum would purchase prizewinners and key works to build its collection.
Through the Carnegie International, the museum has acquired hundreds of works of art that have appeared in the exhibition series.
