In this episode, City Theatre’s Co-Artistic Director Clare Drobot, and playwright and performer, Christopher Rivas, talk about their upcoming production of “The Real James Bond….was Dominican”.
Christopher shares his journey of creating this play, based on a book he wrote, based on the real-life figure of Porfirio Rubirosa and his impact on Christopher’s life years ago. The play has changed and evolved over the years, but Christopher talks about how each night is different due to the audience’s interaction, and his own hope to make every night unique.
Clare talks about he collaboration between City Theatre and DNAWORKS, an arts and service organization dedicated to dialogue and healing through the arts, that recently moved to Pittsburgh and was founded by director Daniel Banks. Clare also highlights how this play taps into City Theatre’s broader mission to build connection and conversation through art.
Chris hopes people come see the play, and he will be handing out signed copies of his book, Brown Enough, which continues the story of Porfirio Rubirosa. Clare also reveals the rest of City Theatre’s 50th season, and beyond.
The Real James Bond…Was Dominican is at City Theatre on the South Side from January 18th to February 16th, with multiple shows offering an after performance story circle, which facilitates communal conversation about connections and personal stories that the production evokes.
