In this episode, we discuss Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s celebration “In the Spirit of Rev. Dr. King: An MLK Day Celebration Through Art and Advocacy” on January 20th from 1-4 pm.
Co-Executive Director Joseph Hall, Marketing Specialist Mingsi Ma, and choreographer and dancer Rickia Davenport, spoke about this free celebration that honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through powerful art, community engagement, and much more.
Joseph talks about why continuing to celebrate MLK in East Liberty is so important, and how art continues to influence advocacy. Mingsi runs through the days activities and the list of community partners coming in to perform, which includes Hill Dance Academy Theatre (HDAT), Los Sabrosos Dance Company, and Guardians of Sound’s Hip Hop Orchestra. Rickia talks about her powerful commissioned dance piece ” Bearing Life: A Dance Play on Black Women’s Reproductive Health”.
The celebration concludes with the Let Freedom Sing concert with Dr. Herbert Jones and the Heritage Gospel Choir at 7:30 pm. Joseph also gives a highlight of exciting things to come at KST!
