Longtime Professor of Organ Studies at Duquesne University, Ann Labounsky, will be receiving a prestigious award from the American Guild of Organists (AGO) this month.
As part of the award ceremony, she will perform a recital. She talks about the program for that recital, which includes works by Sainte-Clotilde, Tournemire, and her mentor Jean Langlais.
Ann talks with Jim Cunningham about her 56-year career at Duquesne University, and her organ studies spanning many years. She reflects on her Fulbright-funded studies in Paris, and her extensive work recording the complete organ music of Jean Langlais. She also talks about her influential teachers over the years, including David Craighead, Marylin Mason, and many others.
Her advice to her younger students is to breathe. She reflects on the challenges of attracting younger musicians, and the shortage of organists. After the awards ceremony, she is looking forward to traveling with her daughters and continuing to play music.
You can hear Ann Labounsky’s recital and award ceremony on Friday, April 25th at 7:30 pm at the Duquesne University Chapel. This recital is also part of the Organ Artists Series of Pittsburgh.
