Musical Disguises - We often think of disguise as a deception of the eye, but this week on Harmonia, we're exploring deception of the ear. For centuries, musicians have experimented with sonic trickery: to tell a story, to emphasize meaning, or just for fun. We'll hear voices pretending to be instruments, instruments pretending to be each other, and ensembles of all kinds transforming extramusical sounds into art.
William Shakespeare wrote that, "Some Cupid kills with arrows, some with traps." Shakespeare didn't mention that the so-called god of love sometimes used the kind of bow that's used to play a string instrument. Cupid is the protagonist of a Violin Sonata. Their mythological love story is just one of the musical love stories you'll hear on Sunday Baroque this week.
