WQED-FM's Jim Cunningham interviews Oscar Swan, Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh about his new book Kaleidoscope of Poland published by the University of Pittsburgh Press. The book contains over 1000 entries on Polish cultural, historical and political figures. Polish cars, celebrities, film makers, and places all appear along with color photographs. Included are Chopin and his monument in Warsaw’s Lezienki Park, Penderecki, Lutoslawski, Szymanowski, Wanda Landowska, and Roman Polanski. There are cult films including Marek Koterski’s Day of the Wacko, Lech Walesa, Pope John Paul II, Jerzy Kosinski, Marie Curie, the Polish airline LOT, the immense Oliwa organ with moving figures and its own organ festival, zubrowka bison grass vodka, zurek the sour rye bread soup, bagels, pierogis, sausages, and street food. The book is not a list but a personal wise and witty tour of Poland with Oscar Swan’s opinions expressed throughout. Four respected historians vetted the book and it includes a timeline of Polish revolutions, Polish literary figures, rulers, a Polish Pronunciation guide and a foreword by Adam Zamoyski.

It’s the first production of the Gerri Kay New Voices Program founded to support and mentor new artists.
