Resonance Works Invites you to Rossini’s “La donna del lago” – June 28 & 30, 2024
June 28 @ 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm
The first performances of this brilliant opera in the U.S. since 2015 at the Met!
For the first time, we are stretching our season into the summer with the Pittsburgh premiere of one of opera’s rarest sparkling jewels, Rossini’s La donna del lago. The first of the many Italian operas based on the works of Sir Walter Scott, La donna del lago (The Lady of the Lake), features another operatic rarity: a heroine with agency, who – spoiler alert! – does not die! Filled with dueling high notes and coloratura fireworks, this story of love, loyalty, (and lochs!) in the Scottish highlands is a unique bel canto experience not to be missed!
Take a trip to the Scottish highlands with our final production of the season, Rossini’s La donna del lago. Today he’s primarily known for operatic comedies like The Barber of Seville and La Cenerentola, but Rossini left behind a catalogue of 39 operas (!), a rich legacy that has gone under-explored.
The Metropolitan Opera programmed La donna del lago in 2015, but it hasn’t been seen in the United States since then—until now.
La donna del lago spotlights two returning members of our artistic family. Timothi Williams (Rigoletto, To Breathe Free, B Minor Mass) brings her lush mezzo-soprano to the virtuosic title role of Elena alongside internationally-lauded tenor and Pittsburgh Opera Center alum Javier Abreu (B Minor Mass) as Uberto (King James V in disguise!) Making their Resonance Works debuts are nationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Amanda Crider and rising star tenor Minghao Liu. Our production team is led by first-time Resonance Works collaborator Eve Summer as stage director, with Artistic Director Maria Sensi Sellner on the podium. Designers Gianni Downs, Eve Bandi, and Damian Dominguez create the mystical world of the 16th century Scottish Highlands in the intimate setting of the Charity Randall Theatre.
La donna del lago will leave you with a smile on your face and a song in your heart. Don’t miss this exhilarating romantic bel canto opera – in kilts!
