Cleveland-based lutenist and singer Brian Kay brings several plucked instruments– from Medieval lyre to 15th century lute to the Middle Eastern komuz and oud– for a program titled “In Nottamun Town”. Brian shows how the distinction between “folk music” (the music of common people, often passed down orally and changing across generations) and “art music” (fully composed pieces, often written for the aristocracy and copied into books) has always been somewhat porous. His program will cover a wide variety of music, including songs from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, as well as lute music from different countries. He’s a great combination of scholar and musician, storyteller and artist, and this will be a fantastic and enlightening concert.
