Allegheny Historic Preservation Society and Calvary United Methodist Church to hold its Annual Summer Solstice Open House featuring the restored Tiffany Windows.
June 20 @ 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeThis is a once-a-year opportunity to experience the beauty of Calvary’s magnificent Tiffany windows. Calvary United Methodist Church is home to three large and visually stunning Tiffany-stained glass windows. Restored two decades ago through the efforts of the Allegheny Historic Preservation Society (AHPS), each year on the Summer Solstice, we witness the amazing sunlight in spectacular ways at the start of the season.
This year the theme of “Tiffany: The Artist and Innovator” will be the focus of guided tours in the sanctuary of the church. Every 15 minutes a docent lead tour will be available for visitors to the open house.
Calvary Church was constructed between 1893-1895 and is an excellent example of Gothic Revival architecture complete with soring towers, exterior carvings of faces, grotesques (gargoyles like creatures), vines and foliage, and three large windows depicting Biblical events. Each consists of three lancets – two of the windows reach heights of 30 feet. All are excellent examples of Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company’s artistry, craftsmanship, innovative design, and glass manufacturing.
Adding to the open house this year will be an “Art Show” by dozens of local artists who are associated with Calvary Church. Art works will include oil paintings, architectural sketches, colored pencil drawings, stained glass art, photography, and more. The Art Show will be held in the Chapel of the Church.
Refreshments will be also available to visitors in the Chapel, provided by the members and friends of AHPS and Calvary Church.
The Allegheny Historic Preservation Society is a Non-Profit historic preservation organization that has raised several million dollars to help preserve the historic Calvary Church structure by restoring its windows, replacing leaking roofs, rehabbing the oak ceiling, and so much more.
Calvary United Methodist Church, originally constructed as Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church, is a vibrant and inclusive congregation that welcomes people from all walks of life into its shared ministry. Calvary is a member of the Reconciling Ministries Network which celebrates that LGBTQ+ persons are a good expression of God’s diverse creation and exists to advocate for the affirmation of all God’s children in the Church and the world.
Calvary Church is proud to have Rev. Beth L. Nelson as its pastor since 2023. Rev. Beth brings to life the love of God to all those who need to hear and feel a message of gratitude and welcome.
