As a member of the 978th Field Artillery Battalion, I was stationed in England before shipping out to France shortly after the D-Day invasion. While serving meals in the Officer's Mess Hall one day, I encountered one of the ladies from the American Red Cross Clubmobile. She liked the way I wore my cook's hat and asked to sketch my portrait. I carried it with me through the rest of World War II and brought the sketch home with me. Some years ago, my daughter had it framed and hung it on our wall but, ever since then, we've always wondered who the artist, Elizabeth Black, was. As I celebrate my 91st birthday, I consider myself one of the lucky ones – to have returned home from the war and, now, to be a part of Elizabeth Black's legacy. -Robert Ehrenreich, Sheboygan, WI - November 11, 2014 ----------------------------------- Editor's Note: Ten months after Robert Ehrenreich shared this portrait along with memories of his wartime encounter with Elizabeth Black, he passed away at the age of 91, September 19, 2015. Our condolences to his family. - David Solomon, Executive Producer, WQED Pittsburgh.
