Raquel Winnica Young, Mezzo-Soprano, Lenny Young, Oboe, and Michael Hammer, Organ, present "Songs With and Without Words," as Central Presbyterian Church in Tarentum continues its concert series this season.
When a composer wants a vocal or instrumental performer to use a legato, connected melodic line, he often writes cantabile, or "singable." This program explores many kinds of "singable" melodies: those sung by a mezzo-soprano, those originally sung as a chorale and then transformed by the organ, those "sung" by the oboe and amplified by the intertwining of oboe and voice. Featured are several works by the great master of melodic counterpoint, Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as works by two German Romantic composers and a 20th century Dutch master. And in recognition that the last month of the year is a great time for singing, half the program is devoted to music for the Christmas holiday.
A Goodwill Offering will be received, and refreshemnts will follow the concert. For more information, call the church at (724) 224-9220, or visit us on Facebook at Central Presbyterian Church Tarentum.
