A note from George L. Miles, Jr. President and Chief Executive Officer, WQED Pittsburgh

The cultural season kicks off this month and the big news is the arrival of Manfred Honeck as the new music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. With excitement building in the region, WQED will offer special programming on television and radio to welcome Maestro Honeck in advance of his inaugural Heinz Hall concert as Music Director.

OnQ Managing Editor Michael Bartley spent time with Maestro Honeck in his native Vienna earlier this year and featured the trip on OnQ. Michael was also along as Maestro Honeck made a trip to Pittsburgh in May, and that story will be featured on a special one-hour edition of OnQ called Manfred Honeck: Pittsburgh’s New Maestro on Thursday, September 18 at 8pm on WQED-TV. Maestro Honeck and Michael visit the sights of Pittsburgh and take in a Pirates game at PNC Park, take a ride on the incline, and get a feel for the Maestro’s new city.

WQED-FM 89.3 is pulling out all the stops to welcome Maestro Honeck and will broadcast the Pittsburgh Symphony Opening Night concert live on Friday, September 26 at 8pm. Jim Cunningham interviews the Maestro on the WQED Morning Show in the week leading up to opening night.
