(5) Program Description, Content and Outros
This celebration of 1960s folk rock music is hosted by Judy Collins and The Smothers Brothers.

ACT #1 (length 18:41):

The program opens on WQED logo, tease, Viewers Like You/Thank You funding credit, voice over introduction of Judy Collins with partial program credits.

Performances in sequence:

Judy Collins sings "Both Sides Now."

The audiences rises in a standing ovation, and Judy says: "Tonight on PBS you're going to see both sides of the story of American folk music, and I want to thank PBS and all the stations that show this show. You know we love PBS, and I don't know what I would do without it. So, support it and watch us and listen to this story tonight ...."

Collins introduces The Smothers Brothers and they talk a bit about their shared history. Collins exits the stage, and The Smothers Brothers introduce the first folk group whose music was a huge hit with young folks, The Kingston Trio.

The Kingston Trio sings "Tom Dooley" and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" (traded latter song with Peter, Paul and Mary for "Lemon Tree").

Close: The Highwaymen sing "Michael, Row The Boat Ashore" (a 19th century folk song).

Outro: Shots of stage and applauding audience (standing ovation), and upcoming performance shots, with this voice over tease/pledge pitch: "Stay tuned next for more American folk memories from The Brothers Four, and the Limelighters reunite with Glen Yarbrough. Right now is the time to thank your PBS station for producing this program. Call the number on your screen with your pledge." Fade to black. There is space for a lower-third station phone number key throughout (length :14).

Break #1 (length :35)

ACT #2 (length 18:41):

The program reopens with Judy Collins, Tom and Dick Smothers seated on stage, with applause under. They note how folk music expressed the emotions and feelings of a generation and then they introduce the next performer, Glenn Yarbrough (performed with The Limelighters, left the group to perform on his own and reunites with the group at this concert).

Performances in sequence:

Glen Yarbrough begins by saying: "Thank you so much. I know everyone here and everybody in the audience at home realize that PBS needs money. And I'm about the worst guy to ask for it because I can't ask for anything (he laughs). However, I'll make a deal for you, for those at home and here. The next time you go to your telephone, think PBS. And you might not do it the first time, and you might not do it the tenth time, but someday you're going to put money where your mouth is and I hope you do it soon cause we need this kind of show." (Audience applauds.)

Glen Yarbrough sings "Baby, The Rain Must Fall."

Glenn Yarbrough and The Limelighters sing "There's A Meetin' Here Tonight." (Yarbrough exits the stage.)

Before The Limelighters sing, a group member says: " ... I'd just like to congratulate all of you for helping PBS with your pledges, with your time, with your effort. And we hope you'll continue to pledge and that all of your family will continue to pledge, because there's nothing like PBS. There really isn't. We must have it. We love it. We can't live without it."

The Limelighters sing "Generic Up-tempo Folk Song." (These lyrics are fun!)

On stage, Judy Collins, Tom and Dick Smothers chat and joke about Tom's college career, then introduce the next act – fraternity brothers who met on campus at the University of Washington.

The Brothers Four sing "Green Fields."

Close: The Brothers Four sing "Try To Remember." (There's a shot of a woman wiping a tear from her eye.)

Outro: Shots of stage and applauding audience (standing ovation), and upcoming performance shots, with this voice over tease/pledge pitch: "Still ahead, folk rock legends McGuinn, McGuire and a touching reunion with Randy Sparks & The Minstrels you won't want to miss. Now's the time to call your PBS station and help preserve our American soundtrack. Call now with your pledge." Fade to black. There's space for a lower-third station phone number key throughout (length :14).

Break #2 (length :35)

ACT #3 (length 22:03):The program reopens on funding credit, followed with Judy Collins on stage, as she introduces The Smothers Brothers. Dick says: "We're so happy to be here at this PBS fundraising special and, any of you folks watching, and we hope you want to feel motivated to join and help underwrite PBS. It's a great thing."

Dick introduces the next song, "The Madrigal." Besides the singing, there's a history lesson on the 600-year-old form of the song that turns into comic routine.

Randy Sparks (founder of The New Christie Minstrels) and The Minstrels sing "Green, Green."

Barry McGuire sings "Eve of Destruction."

Roger McQuinn (member of the New Christie Minstrels and The Byrds) sings "Mr. Tambourine Man."

McGuinn says: " ... and it's great to be doing something for PBS because I really love PBS too (audience applauds), and thank you all. I love to watch all the educational shows and all the wonderful informative stuff. It's the only real television out there (audience applauds). And, if you haven't given anything to support it, it really needs your help, so I really appreciate that."

Close: Roger McGuinn sings "Turn, Turn, Turn."

Outro: Shots of stage and applauding audience (standing ovation), with this voice over tease/pledge pitch: "Only public television brings you amazing specials like tonight's tribute to the folk years. Take this final opportunity to pledge your support right now." Fade to black. There is space for a lower-third station phone number key throughout (length :09).

CLOSING CREDITS (length 3:07):

Production credits roll over all performers and musicians on stage singing "This Land is Your Land" as audience claps and sings along. There is space for a lower-third station phone number key throughout. WQED logo is next (:03), then PBS System Cue (:06).

Break Intro Scripts

1ST BREAK- Internal:

(TIE INTO PROGRAM)

Were you singing along to "Michael, Row the Boast Ashore?" just now? Well we certainly were! The Highwaymen sure do sound great, as does Judy Collins. Her classic, "Both Sides Now" has never sounded better than it did in the opening to this great concert.

(TEASE OF UPCOMING SEGMENT)

Stay tuned, because after this short membership intermission, there's more great folk music to come, including performances from Glenn Yarbrough, The Limeliters and The Brothers Four!

(WHY WE ARE ENJOYING PROGRAM)

Judy Collins, The Kingston Trio, The Highwaymen…it doesn't get any better than this! What a great look back at the music that moved a generation. Whether this concert takes you back to your younger days, or is introducing you to American folk music for the first time, THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND is an outstanding retrospective of the finest performers in the genre.

(WHY WE ARE IN STUDIO)

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND is a great example of what PBS does best. Instead of airing a pop concert that would garner the biggest viewing audience, we're airing a show that speaks to a smaller group— people like you and me who appreciate American folk music from the 50's and 60's. Nowhere else in the TV spectrum will you find a concert like this, so let us know right now that you appreciate this music on television, and that you'd like to see more of it in the future by becoming a supporting member of WXYZ. Just pick up your phone and dial XXX-XXX-XXXX.

SONG LIST: SEGMENT 1
Both Sides Now (Judy Collins)
Tom Dooley (The Kingston Trio)
Where Have All The Flowers Gone? (The Kingston Trio)
Michael, Row The Boat Ashore (The Highwaymen)

BREAK 1: PERFORMER INFORMATION

Judy Collins has been a popular folk artist for over 40 years, with 37 albums to her credit. Her background is in classical piano, but in 1961 she signed a record deal as a folk guitarist and singer, after having made her way through folk clubs in Colorado, Chicago and ultimately, Greenwich Village in New York. Her early hits include "Chelsea Morning" and "Both Sides Now." She is also well known for her haunting rendition of the classic spiritual, "Amazing Grace" and for her version of Stephen Sondheim's "Send In The Clowns."

The Kingston Trio emerged in 1957 from San Francisco's North Beach club scene to take the country by storm, bringing the rich tradition of American Folk music into the mainstream for the first time. Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard comprised the original line-up. Dave Guard left the group in 1961 and was replaced by John Stewart. In 1967, the group disbanded, and the three pursued solo careers. A year later, in 1968, Bob Shane formed The New Kingston Trio with Pat Horine and Jim Conner. They enjoyed renewed success and recorded two albums. The line-up changed again in 1973, when Bob Shane teamed up with Bill Zorn, formerly of The New Christie Minstrels, and Roger Gambill. 1976 brought another change in members— Bill Zorn departed and Bob and Roger were joined by George Grove. Roger Gambill died of a heart attack in 1985, and Bob Haworth, also a member of The Brothers Four, joined the group. Three years later (1988), Bob left to pursue his solo career and, in what must have been destiny, original member Nick Reynolds returned. His stint lasted until 1999 when he decided to retire. At that point, Bob Haworth re-joined the trio, and today the line-up stands at Bob Shane, George Grove, and Bob Haworth.
The Kingston Trio's most well-known songs include "Tom Dooley," "M.T.A.," "Molly Dee," "Tijuana Jail" and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" (for which they traded with Peter, Paul & Mary the song "Lemon Tree")

The Highwaymen met as Connecticut fraternity brothers and became known for the kind of close harmony singing that simple folk melodies required. They had hits in the early 1960's with "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore." and "Cotton Fields," originally written by Leadbelly (1885-1949), the larger than life African-American folk singer.

2ND BREAK- Internal:

(TIE INTO PROGRAM)

I don't think there was a dry eye in the audience during that last song, "Try To Remember" by the Brothers Four. Its' amazing that so many of these songs from the 50's and 60's folk era have become classics that we all remember and love so much.

(TEASE OF UPCOMING SEGMENT)

We're not done with this great concert of American folk music, so don't go away. In the next part of THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND, we'll be treated to the music and comedy of The Smothers Brothers, plus we'll hear from The New Christy Minstrels, Barry McGuire and— from that great 60's group, The Byrds— Roger McGuinn.

(WHY WE ARE ENJOYING PROGRAM)

America is the birthplace of lots of great music, but none is better than what we're enjoying right now! The 50's and 60's gave us some of the best folk music ever—it was a time when musicians looked to the past to create something new that really connected with people. And this special concert, THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND, brings it all back with the performers who made it happen, like The Limeliters, The Brothers Four, The New Christy Minstrel, Judy Collins, and Roger McGuinn.

BREAK 2: PERFORMER INFORMATION

Glenn Yarbrough has over 75 albums to his credit including both his chart-topping stint as The Limeliters' lead tenor and his marathon solo career. The milestones of Glenn's success are varied, from his #1 hit "Baby, The Rain Must Fall," his best-selling collaboration with Poet Rod McKuen called "The Lonely Things" to his recent album "Family Portrait", recorded with his daughter, Holly.

The Limeliters have entertained standing-room-only crowds for over 40 years! Their self-titled first album, with the lineup of Glenn Yarbrough, Alex Hassilev and Lou Gottleib, was released in early 1959, and a string of best-selling albums followed. At the height of their success, they decided to disband so each member could pursue other interests. In 1981, Alex and Lou decided to re-form the group, and added a soaring new tenor to the mix—Red Grammer. Red left in 1990 to pursue a career in children's music, and Rick Dougherty replaced him. Lou Gottlieb died in 1996, but former Kingston Trio member Bill Zorn took over, lending his powerful vocals to the group's unique sound. The band is loved for a large collection of rousing songs, including such audience-pleasers as "There's a Meetin' Here Tonight," "City of New Orleans," "A Dollar Down," "Have Some Madeira M'Dear," "Lonesome Traveler," "Wabash Cannonball," and "Whiskey in the Jar."

The Brothers Four were fraternity brothers (Bob Flick, John Paine, Mike Kirkland & Dick Foley) from the University of Washington who joined forces in 1958. After making the rounds of college shows and clubs in Seattle, they headed to San Francisco, performing in poplar folks clubs and landing themselves a record contract. In 1960, their self-titled album generated the hit single "Green Fields." Their success continued with the song "The Green Leaves of Summer" which was from the John Wayne movie, THE ALAMO. In 1969, Mike Kirkland left, and Mark Pearson joined the group. Mark left for a period in the mid-seventies and was replaced by Bob Haworth, later of Kingston Trio fame. Dick Foley left in 1990, and Terry Lauber replaced him.

BREAK 3: PERFORMER INFORMATION

The Smothers Brothers, Tom & Dick Smothers, have been entertaining America with their blend of music and comedy for over 42 years. They started out in San Francisco's folk scene performing at the Purple Onion. Their first national TV appearance was in 1961 on The Jack Paar Show. In the 1960's they starred in their own prime-time comedy series, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR. The show broke new ground, appealing to the counterculture by featuring rock groups like The Who and The Doors, and the brother's take on the Vietnam War, the President, and the state of the country in general. They were subjected to much censorship, which they took a stand against, and their social and political commentary eventually got them fired from CBS. In the mid-seventies, the brothers were back on TV with THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS SHOW, but it was a shadow of their former program and was short lived. Since then, The Smothers Brothers have continued to make guest appearances on other shows and tour the country with their act.

New Christy Minstrels were formed in 1961 in NYC by Randy Sparks and were named after the mid-19th-century Christy Minstrels. They were successful because their big sound (10 members!) was refreshing at the time and because members contributed original material, such as their biggest hit "Green Green"' written by Sparks and Barry McGuire. Their only other top 40 hits were "Saturday Night" and "Today" (the latter from the comedy western ADVANCE TO THE REAR for which Sparks wrote the music. They played at the White House and had a TV show mid-1964; Sparks sold them to a management group and continued as manager for a while; they continued touring and recording for some years. Mike Settle was musical director mid-'60s until he left, taking others with him to form the First Edition. Sparks also formed the Back Porch Majority, did studio work, wrote special material for Burl Ives, John Denver etc; became a rancher '70s and toured as Randy Sparks and the Patch Family. Notable alumni of the group include Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes, Barry McGuire, and Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark of The Byrds.

Barry McGuire, in the 1960's, became one of the first rock protest singers. He joined Randy Sparks' New Christy Minstrels in the early 60's and became the group's lead singer. He did the lead with his gritty voice on their first big hit, Green, Green, in 1963. He left the New Christy Minstrels to go solo and came up with a giant hit, a protest song titled Eve Of Destruction. It was also to be McGuire's only top forty record as an independent act, although he added some minor hits such as Child Of Our Times and Cloudy Summer Afternoon. McGuire was friends with the Mamas and Papas, who mentioned him in the lyrics of their narrative record about their own group, Creeque Alley. Barry McGuire released several albums on into the early 70's that were not big sellers. He later turned to Contemporary Christian music and met with much success. His Eve Of Destruction is regarded as one of the most popular protest songs of the 60's.

Roger McGuinn is a well known musician who was an original member of The New Christy Minstrels. After he departed the group, he teamed up with David Crosby (who later went on to the super group Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young). The two experimented with different musical styles, developing an exclusive sound that blended folk music with electronic amplification. In 1964, Crosby and McGuinn (guitar and vocals) started their first band — the Byrds — with fellow musicians Gene Clark (vocals, guitar, and tambourine), Chris Hillman (bass and vocals), and Michael Clarke (drums). In May 1965, the Byrds released their first single, a remake of "Mr. Tambourine Man" (originally released by Bob Dylan earlier that same year), which skyrocketed to the top of the charts and held a place as one of the Top 10 songs for 13 weeks. The band followed their initial success with two more hit singles — "All I Really Want to Do" and a modern version of Pete Seeger's "Turn! Turn! Turn!" Following his stints with The Byrds and a few other bands, he has enjoyed a successful solo career.
