General Program Information

Series Title: All-American Documentaries Series
Exact Program Title: Sandwiches That You Will Like
National Release Date: January 8, 2003
Rights Period: Unlimited PTV releases during the period 12/1/02 thru 12/31/05 (3 years). Any release of the Pledge Event will constitute as a release of the core program.

Description of the Program:
This quirky, fast-paced documentary is a celebration of great sandwiches from lobster rolls in Maine to French-dips in Los Angeles. It's America between two pieces of bread. Producer Rick Sebak ("A Hot Dog Program," "An Ice Cream Show" and other popular PBS programs) and his crew travel from Buffalo, where beef-on-weck is big and beautiful, to New Orleans, where po-boys and muffalettas are scrumptious and plentiful, tasting distinctive sandwiches and talking to the people who know and love them.

There are old favorites like peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches, and some recent arrivals like the Vietnamese submarine-style sandwiches called "banh mi." The program also includes a bit of sandwich history, served up with great regional specialties like Italian beefs in Chicago, chipped ham in Pittsburgh, cheese steaks and hoagies in Philadelphia, and the mysterious "St. Paul sandwiches" (egg foo yung on white bread with lettuce and tomato) that are sold only in Chinese restaurants in St. Louis.

Special attention is also paid to the places where you can get some of these not-so-fast foods, like the rib sandwiches at Thelma's BarBQue in Houston's Third Ward, the Hot Browns at the Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, and the luscious loose meat-style sandwiches called "Maid-Rites" at Taylor's Maid-Rite in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Also, be warned: Sandwiches That You Will Like will make you hungry. Have sandwich fixings nearby before watching.

Description of premium content:
The sandwich is such an essential part of American culture that we could easily overlook its importance and take its convenient and delicious nature for granted. But not now.

In this beefy and tasty volume, author Becky Mercuri explains the origin of the sandwich and its arrival in America. She reports how Americans adopted the idea of meats and other goodies between two pieces of bread and shows how various immigrant cultures and regions of the country have created distinctive variations.

The book includes stories and recipes for over 75 different sandwiches like the Dagwood, the Muffuletta, the Reuben, the Sloppy Joe and many more.
There's also a photo-filled Production Diary from TV producer Rick Sebak, explaining some of the behind-the-scenes activities involved in putting together the documentary PBS special,
Sandwiches That You Will Like.
