Program Title: America’s Home Cooking: Quick & Easy

National Release Date: August 1, 2004

Rights Period: Unlimited PTV releases 8/1/04 – 8/31/07

Description of the Program:
To paraphrase a famous adage, “Everyone wants to eat but nobody wants to spend hours in the kitchen cooking.” “Quick and Easy,” the latest installment in the WQED Multimedia Pittsburgh’s America’s Home Cooking series, is the perfect solution for those folks who love to cook but are short on time.

In “Quick and Easy,” hosts Chris Fennimore and Nancy Polinsky welcome guest cooks into the kitchen studio to demonstrate some fast and flavorful recipes from the cookbook along with a few of their own favorites.

The “Quick and Easy” companion cookbook contains over 100 recipes, which take only a few minutes to put together and contain 7 ingredients, or less. This is the perfect cookbook and program for viewers who don’t have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen or in the supermarket. And the big surprise is that you can end up with absolutely delicious recipes.

Core Program Content and Outros:
Act #1 (length 12:25):
The program opens on WQED Multimedia Logo. Then funding credits: Viewers Like You/Thank You and program open with title graphic for America's Home Cooking.

Intro with show hosts Chris Fennimore and Nancy Polinsky:
” HI, I'M CHRIS FENNIMORE. I DON'T HAVE BLUE EYES. BUT I'M HERE IN THE KITCHEN, THE ‘AMERICA'S HOME COOKING’ KITCHEN WITH...NANCY POLINSKY. I DON'T HAVE BLUE EYES, EITHER, BUT I LOVE OLD BLUE EYES. GOOD CHOICE OF SONG. AND I LOVE THINGS THAT ARE QUICK, EASY AND DELICIOUS. AND, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES YOU SAY YOU CAN HAVE TWO BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE THREE. BUT IN THE CASE OF ALL OF THE RECIPES THAT WE'VE COLLECTED AND PUT INTO A BRAN -NEW ‘AMERICA'S HOME COOKING’ COOKBOOK, THEY ARE QUICK, EASY AND DELICIOUS. AND THAT'S AN IMPORTANT TRIO. WE'RE GOING TO TELL YOU HOW YOU CAN GET YOUR OWN COPY OF THIS TERRIFIC COOKBOOK AND SUPPORT PUBLIC TELEVISION AT THE SAME TIME. BUT, YOU KNOW, AS USUAL, THE REAL START TO THIS IS DOING SOME COOKING. AND YOU'RE GOING TO START US OFF. YES, I'M GOING TO MAKE SOMETHING CALLED PASTA CON PISELLI.”
Recipe #1: Pasta with Peas - Nancy & Chris
OUTRO (length 00:08): Title graphic.

Break 1 (length 00:36)

Act #2 (length 11:51)
The program reopens on title graphic. Then Nancy introduces first guest Fran Flaherty:
” WELCOME BACK INTO THE KITCHEN. QUICK & EASY, THAT'S THE NAME OF THE GAME TODAY. AND WE HAVE A WOMAN HERE WITH US, FRAN FLAHERTY. AND HER SON LIAM.LIAM'S GOING TO BE HELPING US, IS THAT CORRECT? ARE YOU GOING TO HELP? AND SHE HAS A RECIPE THAT SHE INSISTS IS QUICK AND EASY. THIS IS ONE I'VE NEVER ATTEMPTED TO MAKE AT HOME. I ALWAYS ORDER IT WHEN I GO OUT. BUT MAYBE THAT'LL CHANGE. YOU'RE GOING TO BE MAKING...FRIED RICE. I REALLY THOUGHT THAT WAS A DIFFICULT THING TO DO. NO, IT'S NOT. IT TAKES JUST A COUPLE OF MINUTES. MAYBE 10 MINUTES MAX.”
Recipe #2: Fried Rice
OUTRO (length 00:10): Title graphic.

Break #2 (length 00:36)

Act #3 (length 11:50):
The program reopens on title graphic. Chris introduces Danine Ross:
” I AM IN THE KITCHEN WITH DANINE ROSS. DANINE, IT'S GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN. DANINE HAS ACTUALLY BEEN IN OUR KITCHEN BEFORE. AS A MATTER OF FACT, SHE WAS IN IT BEFORE IT EVEN LOOKED LIKE A KITCHEN. NOW WE HAVE A NEWLY REMODELED KITCHEN, AND IT'S REALLY TERRIFIC TO WORK IN. BUT THE REASON WHY WE ASKED DANINE BACK IS BECAUSE SHE MADE A RECIPE ON ONE OF OUR COOKING SHOWS THAT HAS BECOME SO POPULAR THAT WE THOUGHT AND IT'S SO QUICK AND EASY THAT WE HAD TO INCLUDE IT IN THIS PROGRAM AND IN THIS COOKBOOK. SO DANINE, WHAT'S THE NAME OF THIS RECIPE? REUBEN CASSEROLE.”
Recipe #3: Reuben Casserole
OUTRO (length 00:12): Title graphic.

Break #3 (length 00:35)

Act #4 (12:33):
The program reopens on funding credits: Viewers Like You/Thank You, then title graphic with music. Chris & Nancy open the act with the following comments:
” THAT'S WHAT I LIKE, A LITTLE MUSIC TO GO ALONG WITH THE COOKING. MY NAME IS CHRIS FENNIMORE, AND WE'RE HERE IN THE ‘AMERICA'S HOME COOKING’ KITCHEN MAKING ‘QUICK & EASY’ RECIPES. AND I'M NANCY POLINSKY, AND ‘QUICK & EASY’ IS MY MIDDLE NAME. IN THE KITCHEN, IN THE KITCHEN, THAT'S MY MIDDLE NAME. I LOVE RECIPES. I WORK ALL DAY, I GET HOME LATE, I GOT TO TURN AROUND AND GET THE KIDS OUT TO SOME BASEBALL PRACTICE OR CREW PRACTICE OR WHO KNOWS WHAT, AND WE'VE GOT ALL OF 45 MINUTES TO TURN A MEAL AROUND. AND EVERYTHING THAT WE'RE DOING HERE TODAY CAN BE DONE IN ABOUT THAT AMOUNT OF TIME. OH,YEAH, AND WITH 7 INGREDIENTS OR LESS AND USUALLY USING ONE POT.
SO THERE'S QUICK CLEAN-UP, AND AS WE SAID, IT'S QUICK, EASY, AND DELICIOUS. SO THOSE ARE THE CRITERIA THAT WE HAD FOR SELECTING THE RECIPES THAT WILL BE IN THE COOKBOOK AND FOR SELECTING THE FOLKS WHO ARE GOING TO COME ON. THAT'S RIGHT, IT'S GOING TO BE A LOT OF FUN. AND WE HAVE A TERRIFIC GUEST WHO'S GOING TO MAKE SOMETHING QUICK AND EASY, BUT REALLY HEARTY. AND KEVIN, WHY DON'T YOU COME ON IN HERE? THIS IS KEVIN JACKSON. NICE TO SEE YOU, KEVIN.”
Recipe #4: Chicken and Dumplings
OUTRO (length 00:08): Title graphic.

Break #4 (length 00:36)

Act #5 (11:39):
The program reopens on title graphic and music.
” THIS IS ONE OF THOSE RECIPES THAT FALLS INTO SO MANY CATEGORIES THAT IT COULD BE A COMFORT FOOD, IT COULD BE A CASSEROLE, BUT IT ALSO HAPPENS TO BE QUICK AND EASY. IT'S LIKE ONE STEP AWAY FROM PLAIN MASHED POTATOES, WHICH IS -- I MEAN, PLAIN MASHED POTATOES ARE PRETTY QUICK AND EASY. BUT WE CALL IT BAKED MASHED POTATOES, AND THIS WAS A REAL FAVORITE. I WOULD HOLD OFF EATING ANYTHING, IF I KNEW MY MOTHER WAS MAKING THIS, I DIDN'T EAT ANYTHING ELSE, SO I COULD HAVE TWO PORTIONS OF THIS.”
Recipe #5: Baked Mashed Potatoes.
OUTRO (length 00:08): Title graphic.

Break #5 (length 00:36)

Act #6 (13:42):
The program reopens with title graphic and music. Nancy introduces next guest: Penny Lawrence:
” I HAVE A COLLECTION OF FAVORITE QUICK AND EASY RECIPES THAT ARE JUST DOG-EARED FROM MY USING THEM OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. AND ONE OF THEM IS A RECIPE THAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE NOW. I MET PENNY LAWRENCE YEARS AGO. SHE MADE THIS RECIPE FOR ME, AND PENNY, I HAVE LOVED IT EVER SINCE. OH, THANK YOU. IT IS NOT ONLY QUICK AND EASY, IT IS SO DELICIOUS YOU COULD DIE. WELL, YOU CAN'T, THIS IS A NO-FAIL RECIPE. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT? YOU CANNOT MESS THIS RECIPE UP. IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT. THEN THAT'S WHY IT'S ALWAYS SO GOOD WHEN I MAKE IT. AND PARTICULARLY SINCE IT'S PHYLLO, AND EVERYBODY GETS ALL SCARED AND HYPER AND EVERYTHING, YOU CAN'T MESS IT UP. ALL RIGHT, WELL, WE HAVEN'T EVEN TOLD THE VIEWERS WHAT IT IS. OH, THE BLUEBERRY BIRD'S NEST STRUDEL.”
Recipe # 6: Blueberry Bird's Nest Strudel
OUTRO (length 00:08): Title graphic.

Break #6 (length 00:36)

Act #7 (11:23):
The program reopens on funding credit (Viewers Like you/Thank you), then title graphic and music. Chris & Nancy introduce next recipe
” HI, FOLKS, MY NAME IS CHRIS FENNIMORE. AND I'M NANCY POLINSKY. AND WE ARE HERE IN ‘AMERICA'S HOME COOKING’ KITCHEN TO BRING YOU SOME TERRIFIC RECIPES THAT HAVE BEEN SENT IN. AND WE'VE SELECTED SOME OF THE ONES THAT WERE SENT IN. I GUESS OVER 100 RECIPES WERE SENT IN. AND WE'VE SELECTED A COUPLE TO DEMONSTRATE FOR YOU HERE ON THE SHOW TODAY. AND THE WHOLE IDEA IS THAT WE ALL NEED QUICK AND EASY RECIPES. BUT THEY'VE ALSO GOT TO BE DELICIOUS. SO THOSE ARE OUR THREE CRITERIA -- QUICK, EASY, DELICIOUS. AND YOU'VE GOT -- THIS ONE IS IT. I'M GOING TO TELL YOU QUICKLY HOW QUICK AND EASY THIS IS. THE FIRST TIME I EVER MADE THIS RECIPE ON THE AIR WAS BACK WHEN WE WERE DOING, YEARS AGO, LOCAL, OUR FIRST LOCAL COOKING MARATHON. AND WE HAD A SERIES
OF RESTAURANT CHEFS LINED UP. AND I WAS THE SOLE HOST. IT WAS ME ALONE – YOU WEREN'T PART OF IT YET. AND THE FIRST CHEF CALLED 45 MINUTES BEFORE WE WENT ON THE AIR AND SAID HE HAD A FAMILY EMERGENCY, HE HAD TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL AND HE WASN'T GOING TO BE THERE. AND I LOOKED AT THE PRODUCER, I SAID, ‘WHAT DO WE DO?’ THE PRODUCER SAID, ‘I DON'T KNOW.’ AND I SAID, ‘I'M GOING TO RUN HOME.’ I LIVED CLOSE TO THE STATION. I RAN HOME, I HAD THESE FIVE INGREDIENTS IN MY REFRIGERATOR, I BROUGHT THEM BACK. I MADE ONE AND GOT IT IN THE OVEN BEFORE WE WENT ON THE AIR. AND THEN MADE IT ON THE AIR AND PULLED IT OUT. THAT'S HOW QUICK AND EASY THIS IS. OKAY, SO WITHOUT THAT PRESSURE, I'M NOW GOING TO MAKE IT FOR YOU. THIS IS CALLED A BLINTZ LOAF.
Recipe #7: Blintz Loaf
OUTRO (length 00:08): Title graphic.

Break #7 (length 00:36)

Act #8 (10:44):
The program reopens with title graphic and music. Chris introduces next guest Jim Barron.
” WELL, YOU KNOW, I WASN'T SURPRISED THAT WE GOT A WHOLE LOT OF QUICK AND EASY MAIN COURSES, LITTLE ONE-POT DINNERS. BUT I WAS A LITTLE BIT SURPRISED THAT FOR THIS PARTICULAR COOKING SHOW, WE GOT SO MANY TERRIFIC DESSERTS THAT ARE QUICK AND EASY. AND ONE OF THEM WAS SENT IN BY OUR PAL, DR. JIM BARRON, WHO HAS BEEN HERE COOKING BEFORE. AND IT ALSO DOESN'T SURPRISE ME THAT IT INVOLVED THE USE OF A SYRINGE, BECAUSE WITH YOUR MEDICAL BACKGROUND, YOU USE YOUR TOOLS IN DIFFERENT WAYS. BUT WHAT IS THE RECIPE THAT YOU BROUGHT FOR US? THE RECIPE WE'RE GOING TO DO TODAY ARE STRAWBERRIES, THEY'RE COVERED IN CHOCOLATE, BIG DEAL.”
Recipe #8: Strawberries & Chocolate
OUTRO (length 00:08): Title graphic.

Break #8 (length 00:36)

Act #9 (11:32):
The program reopens with title graphic and music. Nancy introduces next guest Risa Thomas Davies
” BACK IN THE KITCHEN WITH YET ANOTHER QUICK AND EASY RECIPE. AND THIS TIME OUR CHEF IS RISA THOMAS DAVIES. SO NICE TO HAVE YOU HERE. AND YOU ARE GOING TO BE MAKING A FILIPINO DISH. YES, I'M MAKING FILIPINO EGG ROLLS, WHICH IS CALLED LUMPIA.”
Recipe #9: Filipino Egg Rolls

Break #9 (length 00:37)
