Friday morning we eat the freebie breakfast in the lobby of our motel. I ask Bob and Glenn if they would mind checking out the fabled Fort Cody souvenir stand here in North Platte. It’s right on the other side of the interstate. No objections.
But first I want to finish my blog [...]

Reading the roadside.

We leave the fort, drive a few blocks north to reconnect with Route 30 and turn left to head westward out of North Platte. Not a half mile down the road, I see a ramshackle used bookstore on the left, and Bob says “Look at this!” There’s a guy riding a gray horse westbound [...]

A quick stop in Medicine Bow

The speed limit in Nebraska on the interstate is 75. Whoosh! We breeze on into Wyoming, decide we can’t afford even a quick stop in Cheyenne, same excuse for not stopping again at the famous Tree in the Rock attraction in the median of I-80.
We sail right by the Lincoln statue at my [...]

Lunch and some striking scenery

I remember reading once a long time ago, a good little essay in the Travel section of the New York Times. It was about the joys of a second visit. So much is new and exciting when you travel, but sometimes it’s good to go back to a place you’ve been before. [...]

The internet at this Holiday Inn Express is working this morning. The woman at the desk this morning smiles and says, “Oh we had some troubles, but everything’s working now.” Oh? And where’s the rude woman who treated me so gruffly last night? And who discovered and fixed the problem if [...]

On gravel roads, several videos

Sunday morning we leave Tooele around 10. At the gate to the Government’s Dugway Proving Ground, we get on gravel roads around 11:00.
We say there’s a disaster a day on this trip. When we get to Fish Springs National Wildlife Preserve in the middle of nowhere Utah, our vehicle gives us another surprise.
Jay [...]

After lunch in Green River, we keep zipping along, and soon we’re in Utah. The terrain changes drastically as we drive into Echo Canyon through the Wasatch Mountains. This is one of the passages that make you wish you had taken several classes in geology when you were in college. The rock [...]

A good Tuesday.

We awake in Carson City, Nevada. We’re taking the Pioneer Branch of the Lincoln Highway around the Southern end of Lake Tahoe, and it’s extraordinary. It’s stunning. It’s cool and goofy.
Bob got married in Stateline twenty years ago. Now he says he wants to bring his wife back. So many good memories. Some gambling too.
Following [...]

I guess it’s our own Lincoln Highway tradition now: we celebrate getting to the Western Terminus by going out for a nice Italian dinner on Union Street. We had stumbled upon the restaurant called Capannina when we made our first cross-country trek last August, and Bob and I think we could try that again. [...]

It’s a beautiful morning in San Francisco. Bright and sunny. No fog.
The folks at the Pacific Heights Inn always have morning coffee and a big box of good donuts in the little office there, so I decide to make that my breakfast. Bob and Glenn go off in search of something more [...]
