A Blog Along The Lincoln Highway

All of this is about a public TV project about one of America’s great roads, and we’re hoping you might enjoy reading about some of our behind-the-scenes work. I’m Rick Sebak, and I write most of the tales. Bob Lubomski is our cameraman. And Glenn Syska has been traveling with us recently. He made the video blog entries in 2008. Back in 2007, Jarrett Buba did all that. A RIDE ALONG THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY first aired on PBS on October 29, 2008 at 8 PM. Check with your local PBS station to find out about repeat broadcasts. Or go for the DVD at www.shopwqed.org.

Never done.

September 17th, 2008 ·

We wrestled our program into the standard PBS hour-length last night.  Fifty-six minutes and forty-six seconds.   I wish we could have made a 90 minute program or a 120.  Many of our stories will premiere on the web.  Keep checking our site for pieces of the original program.  We’ll try to get some up soon.

After several weeks of pretty intense editing — longs days, no weekends, and too many Diet Pepsi’s — the program was shipped tonight via Fed Ex to Washington DC where it will be evaluated, captioned for the hearing-impaired, and prepped for broadcast and DVD.

There are still a few thousand things to be done.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the show. I’ve been following your progress here and on your PBS site. Based on your past productions, I’m sure it will be great.

Editing is always difficult. Thank goodness for the web and DVD extras. Speaking of which, how long before the show will be available on DVD?

    JOE

    Thanks for your kind words.
The DVD is already underway at PBS, and I’ve delivered the program to PBS Home Video, and I’ve picked the chapters and given them titles, but I still have to get the extras together. I’m hoping the DVD will be ready by the time the show airs in late October. Or shortly thereafter.
    Thanks for asking.

I know I’ve heard the music start up and watched the credits roll on many of your specials and while I’ve loved what I’ve just seen, I’ve been left wanting moremoremore! I wish you could make a 90 or 120 minute show too!

Nice stuff Mr. Sebak. I’ve been wondering when I would be getting my next Sebak fix! Hopefully my local PBS station (KERA) will be showing this. They had a Hot Dog Program on yesterday and I love it every time it’s on! Now if there were just some decent places to get a good dog in Dallas! Oh well, it’s State Fair time – I might just have to settle for a Corny Dog!

Anyway – Thanks for all the wonderful shows you’ve done (that I’ve seen) and all the others (mostly about Pittsburgh) that I haven’t. Might have to order those sometime! Keep on coming up with these wonderful ideas for shows!! There’s nothing like them!

Thanks for listening to the rant!

You can rant like that on this blog anytime. Thanks for the kind words.

(Sorry this is late.) You lived!!! Congrats. The California contingent will be getting together at a pizza joint (location still to be determined, but probably in Sacramento) to watch the show on da big screen. I’ll have a diet pepsi in y’all’s honor.

Sitting at my computer way out west in the San Francisco Bay Area enjoying your description of the premier showings of A RIDE ALONG THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY. How you ever condensed the Lincoln Highway into 56 minutes and 46 seconds is a miracle. So now your story is complete and ready for the world to see. Congratulations! I can hardly wait another week to see for myself. I know it will be wonderful and will allow me to relive my ride across America on the LH. Everyone I know has been alerted to the time and their local station.
