It’s Saturday. We take our time getting out of Evanston. Then we zoom eastbound down the interstate. The day is extraordinary, the clouds white and fat against the brilliant blue sky.
The big Wyoming sights along the interstate are snow fences, cattle in the distance, an occasional refinery of some sort, snow-topped mountains to the south. You can’t even see the glories of Tollbooth Rock and the Palisades in Green River when you’re on 80. You go through a tunnel.
Bob drives all morning and says that Rawlins seems like a logical place for lunch. I see a billboard for the Aspen Inn restaurant, and using my iPhone, I try to find out something about it on the internet. Bob sees another billboard and says, “There’s a Thai restaurant too.” That wouldn’t be terrible.
We come into Rawlins a bit skeptical because we haven’t liked much about this place on our two previous overnight stops here. But it’s midday, and everything looks hot and baked in the sun. We find the Aspen Inn on Fifth Street, but it’s closed, open only for dinner nowadays. The Thai place is just ahead on the same side of the street.
Bob gets out and looks down Main Street. “Rawlins is home to the largest Stop sign in the world!” he says. The stop sign at the corner of Main and Fifth Street is huge. We laugh and Bob takes our picture.
We go to Anong’s Thai Cuisine, and it’s delicious. The restaurant is simply designed with dark red walls. The food is wonderful, perfectly cooked, spicy. Maybe the best Thai I’ve ever had. We’re all very happy to have found such a good lunch spot. A first-class surprise in Wyoming!
Shortly after Rawlins, we take 30 north for what’s called the Medicine Bow Loop,
and it’s re-confirmed as one of our favorite stretches of the whole Lincoln Highway. It feels good to be on a two-lane again. There’s little traffic. The sky is postcard perfect. The road goes on forever. Bob gets out the big camera and we start shooting again.
We stop a couple of times to get shots.
