With our glass restored, we decide to try and make up some lost time by jumping on I-80. It’s nicely ironic: by leaving the Lincoln Highway, we end up on the highway to Lincoln. I-80 goes slightly south out of Omaha to Lincoln. All we see of the state capital city is exit signs and outskirts.
We stay on 80 to the Grand Island exit, cutting north there to reconnect with route 30. We did a story last August at a beautiful little gas station on the eastern end of town, and I wouldn’t mind seeing it again, but we reconnect with 30 on the western edge of Grand Island, so we don’t dawdle. We just keep going west.
We decide to look for dinner in Kearney, and soon I spot a place called Little Mexico right there on 30, so Bob pulls in. All three of us order the pork fajitas, recommended by the waitress, and we’re not disappointed.
Afterwards I go out to get a shot of the place and I notice the place’s simple sign by the road. It’s just a pole and a message board. No topper. No name of the restaurant. Then I remember that several bad tornados came through Kearney just a few weeks ago in late May. You can read about them on Butko’s blog. I assume the sign might have been a victim of the storms. I didn’t go back in to ask.
