#8. My hotel room

June 26th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Yes, my room was a highlight of the Conference experience.  Weeks ago, conference co-director Jan Schupert-Arick told me that she’d get me a good corner room in the Holiday Inn that served as the main hotel for this gathering.  I thought:  OK.   Whatever.out-one-window

But when I got to this Holiday Inn Downtown South Bend, and I opened the draperies (why would they close them?), the view was panoramic and very interesting.  My room was on the 12th floor, at the end of the hallway, and two entire walls were glass, giving me an incredible wide-angle bird’s-eye view of downtown South Bend.  As I sat in my room at the small desk there, I could see the dome of the St. Joseph County Courthouse far below.  (Could they have produced children’s aspirin around here as well as Studebakers?) courthouse-view1

I usually don’t pay much attention to any hotel room, but this one was a beauty.   Thanks to Jan for knowing how much difference a snazzy corner room can make.

Longtime South Bend residents remember the other hotel that used to stand on that spot, the Oliver, which makes the Holiday Inn seem pretty spartan! Some pics:

They tore the Oliver down to build the Holiday Inn.

Yep – and they tore it down in the ’60s too, probably as part of some misguided urban renewal program. What a shame.
