National Parks of Western Pennsylvania: An OnQ Special Series

In cooperation with the National Park Service and in conjunction with the national broadcast of the Ken Burns series "The National Parks: America's Best Idea," OnQ visited some of the national parks in Western Pennsylvania. The feature stories aired on WQED-TV's nightly news magazine broadcast "OnQ." Descriptions are listed below, where you can also watch each segment.

Allegheny Portage Railroad - A system of inclined planes and a 900-foot tunnel carved through solid rock made travel through the Allegheny Mountains possible in the 1800s. OnQ reports on the Allegheny Portage Railroad national park in Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

Flight 93 National Memorial - In the years since September 11, 2001, a temporary memorial has marked the spot where United Airlines Flight 93 plunged to the ground near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Now, a permanent memorial is in its final stages of planning and pre-construction. OnQ shows detailed images of what visitors will experience, and reports on the collaborative effort that brought about this new national park.

Fort Necessity National Battlefield - The battle that took place in what is now Fayette County, Pennsylvania between the British, French and Native Americans in 1754 set the stage for the French and Indian War. The fighting eventually spread around the world and became known as the Seven Years War. OnQ's Chris Moore takes viewers on a thought-provoking tour of where it all began: the Fort Necessity National Battlefield.

Johnstown Flood National Memorial - On May 31st, 1889, the South Fork Dam failed and emptied millions of tons of water into the Conemaugh Valley, destroying everything in its path. The flood wiped out Johnstown, Pennsylvania, killing thousands. Seventy-five years later, Congress created a national park to commemorate the victims. OnQ takes viewers to the site, and relives the event with park rangers who feel a special calling to educate visitors about the Johnstown Flood.
