Strange PA Trip – June 25
Cats: Strange Pennsylvania|The first sign of Texas Hold ‘Em reared its ugly head late Wednesday night. Playing a friendly game with the likes of Dave R. & Frank is akin to swimming with sharks while wearing a chum-flavored wetsuit. A mere $10 buy-in worked out to a chip pile with a $500 face value. Frank set up his cellphone to act as a timer so the ante (small blind and big blind) could increase every 10 minutes we played. That just means the stakes go up whether you like it or not… and also that the game wouldn’t last too long. I was hesitant to deal early on because the boys are sticklers for all sorts of Vegas-inspired rules, and I knew they would have to keep reminding me to ”burn” a card at each round of dealing. And they did. After a few lucky hands where a generous amount of “10s” seemed to be coming my way, I found myself all in and tapped out. Frank & Dave battled chips for a while longer with Dave emerging as chip leader in the end. Frank’s fancy silver attache case of poker chips (which he picked up during our Rogers, Ohio flea market shoot) adds about 10 lbs. of heft to his suitcase.
While we were playing, Frank got a call from Glenn Syska. (He’s in the middle, Bob is on the left & Rick is on the right) He’s another cameraman/editor/audio guy from WQED who just got back from shooting all over the country with our friend and co-worker Rick Sebak. Rick’s doing a national PBS documentary on the historic Lincoln Highway. Check out his blog at wqed.org for lots of great behind-the-scenes stuff. Rick’s cameraman Bob Lubomski is also a good friend of ours who has shot a bunch of ’Dave & Dave’ stories when Frank is otherwise occupied and can’t be with us. It’s quite a nice luxury for us to be able to work with pros of that caliber on a daily basis. - Dave H
