So What’s In The Show?

The Shoe House in Hellam, PA
This giant shoe structure was built in 1948 by Pennsylvania “Shoe Wizard” Mahlon N. Haines who let honeymooners stay in the house for free. www.yorklinks.net/VirtYork/shoehse.htm

Randy Garbin, editor of By The Way magazine, met us there:

Tali’s Place at the Frates Bottle in New Bedford, MA
You enter this ice cream parlor and restaurant through the bottom of a 52-foot-tall milk bottle. Great ice cream in a bright white bottle.

Bondurant’s Pharmacy in Lexington, KY
This is a drive-up pharmacy in the shape of a massive mortar and pestle.
Kentucky appreciates it: www.state.ky.us/agencies/khc/bondrnt.htm

Wigwam Village #2 in Cave City, KY
Fifteen tepees sit beside a Kentucky highway. An American roadside classic that attracts travel writers.
You can make reservations here: www.wigwamvillage.com

Tail O’ The Pup in West Hollywood, CA
A true American icon, this hot-dog-shaped stand has lots of loyal customers.
Everybody loves it: www.layouth.com/BTM_02_0.htm

A visit with Jim Heimann, author of California Crazy & Beyond
He’s the man who taught us all to stop and smell the giant donuts.

The World’s Largest Catsup Bottle in Collinsville, IL
In 1949, it was a water tower for fire-prevention purposes at the local Brooks’ catsup bottling plant. Now it’s a national treasure with a stupendous birthday party every year.

The Clam Box in Ipswich, MA
They use only small belly-clams, and they know how to fry them in this architectural oddity. Oh, bring me a boxful if you go.
Here’s some skinny: www.ipswichma.com/clambox/

The Mother Goose House in Hazard, KY
This is a private home, but they never mind travelers who stop to take a photo. Shingled, green and photogenic.
See it: http://hazardkentucky.com/more/goose.htm

The Big Muskie at the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall Of Fame & Museum in Hayward, WI
This five-story-tall fish with sharp teeth sits surrounded by historic fishing gear and a few other big fish.

Orange World in Kissimmee, FL
It’s just half an orange, but it’s big, and it’s a gift shop not a fruit stand.
Take a picture with the Fruity Man: www.orangeworld192.com

WonderWorks in Orlando, FL
It’s a building in the shape of an upside-down building. They say it was brought here from the Bermuda Triangle by a tornado.
A tornado? www.wonderworksonline.com

The Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD
Take a relatively ordinary building (with a few big domes) and decorate it with corn mosaics!
You may want to move here and farm: www.cornpalace.com

Mammy’s Cupboard in Natchez, MS
A building is shaped like the old stereotype of an African-American nursemaid. The food inside is extraordinary southern cooking with sublime desserts.
I read out about it in an old Saveur magazine:
www.natchezdemocrat.com/articles/2003/06/10/features/features91.txt

A visit with Bill Griffith, cartoonist and creator of Zippy The Pinhead
He moved from San Francisco to Connecticut, and he loves to draw. He brings new life to roadside stuff.
Is Zippy in the funnies of your paper? www.zippythepinhead.com

The Big Duck in Flanders, NY
Can you imagine a better roadside stand for selling duck eggs? That’s why Martin Mauer built it in 1930. Now it’s a gift shop and world-class piece of architecture.
