PITTSBURGH, PA – WQED Multimedia’s Studio A will host 200-300 teachers for the Keynote Session of the County-wide Professional Development Day on October 10, 2005. The televised session will run from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on WQED tv13 and be broadcast to over 8,300 teachers at sites throughout Allegheny County. Von Sheppard, Associate Superintendent of the Minneapolis Public Schools, will give the Keynote Address. A message from the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education will be included; a question and answer period will follow the Keynote Address. WQED’s Chris Moore will serve as host for the session.

After the broadcast, a group of 20-40 teachers will remain at WQED for one of the 478 workshops offered as part of the conference. WQED’s Education and Community Resource Center will conduct the workshop, which will focus on the multimedia capacity of WQED and the resources available to enhance classroom activities.

The attendees will tour the station and meet with management, staff and on-air personalities, Rick Sebak, Jim Cunningham and Chris Fennimore, who will share their program and production experiences. The group will also attend a special screening of the Emmy-Award winning Teens OnQ, WQED’s new career education television series geared to middle and high school students.

The County-wide Professional Development Day is part of the “Building On Student Success” initiative, a plan developed by superintendents from the 42 Allegheny County suburban school districts. The Allegheny Unit is facilitating the day. It is the first of three yearly events. Similar conferences will be held in 2006 and 2007.
