‘ESCOLA DE SAMBA,’
DOCUMENTARY EXPLORES THE CREATION OF THE BRAZILIAN CARNIVAL:

Program to be released nationally to public television stations beginning
September 4, 2005

“Escola de Samba” is a one-hour documentary about the creation of the Brazilian Carnival. Viewers follow, over 10 months, how one group called “Camisa Verde e Branco” (Green and White Shirts) selects a theme, prepares music, costumes and three-story-high floats, and conducts rehearsals to compete against other Brazilian groups in the annual grand festival in San Palo.

The program, presented by WQED Multimedia Pittsburgh and distributed by American Public Television, wasproduced by Paul S. Goodman. “Escola de Samba” will be available to public television stations across the country beginning September 4, 2005.

The story unfolds in the streets and life of Sao Paulo. The culture of Brazil and the heritage of the Portuguese and African roots shape the story as well as the songs, dances, and costumes.

An Escola de Samba is an organization that puts some 4,000 people on the street with costumes, song, and dance to be the best in the Brazilian Carnival. Camisa Verde is one of the oldest and most prominent samba schools in San Paulo. The documentary captures how the Camisa Verde group selects its theme, which is about the leader of a mutiny on a Brazilian navy ship against the practice of whipping, and the subsequent government intrigue. The theme sets the stage for the selection of the major music for the celebration. In the month of September, the school selects one song, or samba, from approximately 80 that are submitted. The samba is chosen carefully to be certain the energy level remains high throughout the many months of rehearsals up through the day of the event in March when the school will perform in front of tens of thousands of spectators and a panel of judges.

 Viewers follow the design and production of costumes and of the huge three-story-high floats. Most of the production work is done voluntarily without any pay. The love of Carnival and the allegiance to Camisa Verde drive all of these activities.

The film ends with the spectacle of Carnival, the judging process, and the results of the fierce competition.

Paul Goodman is the Richard M. Cyert Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. Goodman has been studying and writing about people at work for more than 30 years. In addition, he has made numerous educational videos about workers such as steelworkers, nurses, waitresses, string quartets, stone carvers, migrant workers, and so on.

This film is the second feature length documentary produced by Goodman. The first – “The Dabbawallas” – was presented by APT and captured the work of the dabbawallas or “box people,” who deliver 100,000 lunches every day in the city of Bombay, India.

Both Feature films capture complex and large-scale forms of work that operate very effectively because of social and human ingenuity. They also provide the seldom-heard voices of people from intriguing countries in the world.
