Washington's TrailWASHINGTON'S TRAIL
Mission Accomplished

WQED Multimedia is producing a four-part documentary that will bring to life the French and Indian War, a fascinating yet little-understood conflict. Produced and filmed locally, the production is an important, regional economic-development project. "The War That Made America" is planned for broadcast on Wednesdays Jan. 18 and 25, 9-11 p.m.

In 1753, the imperial nations of France and England and Native Americans claimed the Ohio Country, the area encompassing present-day Western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Acting on orders from Virginia Gov. Robert Dinwiddie, 21-year-old George Washington embarked on a dangerous mission throughout the region to deliver a diplomatic message to the French ordering them to evacuate. The French had already erected three forts to reinforce their claim to the area: Fort Presque Isle in Erie, Fort LeBoeuf in Waterford (Erie County) and Fort Machault in Franklin (Venango County).

From bad weather to being fired upon by a Native American near Harmony, Butler County, to a near drowning in the icy waters of the Allegheny River, Washington braved the Western Pennsylvanian wilderness. He reported back to Virginia's governor that the French would not leave, and the military struggle known as the French and Indian War began.

Now, history buffs can follow Washington"s route, learn about events surrounding his conquests during the French and Indian War and enjoy recreational activities by hiking, biking or driving the trail blazed by our nation's first president. For detailed directions, visit the website .
