Making an EntrancePerfect Mix of Anticipation and Delight
Without preamble, the simple wooden gate tucked snugly against the driveway on this private Point Breeze lane creaks invitingly inward. That's "gate-speak" for "guests are always welcome." Magnificent vines conspire to further screen the view until that special moment when the double panels swing just wide enough to reveal the view within.

"I love to watch the expressions on my guests' faces when they walk through the gate into my garden, says the owner. Proud of the dirt beneath her fingernails, this petite blonde laughs gently. It's taken nearly 30 years to orchestrate that perfect mix of anticipation and delight.

"My intention with the gate is to pique curiosity. Then, to be satisfying, the space beyond must be welcoming and stimulating all at the same time, at least that's what I've tried to achieve."

Making an Entrance

Mission accomplished. The Asian-inspired Eden within is lushly planted. Paths narrow to a few inches in spots, forcing careful attention to where a foot is placed. The slowed pace allows surrounding plants to take center stage. Patterns, textures and color mingle to create thoughtful and complex combinations. The sound of water invites the eye to discover its source. Every inch of soil supports a root, and layers of foliage compete for dappled sun.

But one entrance was simply not enough for this accomplished gardener, whose skill with plants and thorough grasp of the concept of "garden rooms" allow her two additional opportunities for "entrances" and numerous hidden spaces within this city lot. Discovery continues, as one reaches these subsequent portals, until you realize you're back at the beginning, having never been in precisely the same place or seen the same view twice. It's time for a curtain call.
