Rise & Shine
HOME COOKIN'

Camelot's
101 S. Main St., Slippery Rock

Known as the "Home of the 99-cent breakfast," Camelot's is a charming
country-inn-like diner nestled in the heart of Slippery Rock's Main Street district. There's nothing shabby about the
99-cent specials, available until 11 a.m. weekdays or noon on Saturday and Sunday. Two eggs, large juicy bacon and toast, or two large fluffy hotcakes and bacon are just two of the choices for under a dollar. Or, if you opt to splurge, choose the Triple Crown: two eggs, two hotcakes, home fries, bacon or sausage and toast for $2.75 until 11 a.m. or $3.25 thereafter. For $1.25, you can indulge in an oversized iced cinnamon roll, made daily by one of the longtime waitresses; or try a slice of homemade pie: red raspberry, blueberry and peach selections were available one weekday morning. After breakfast, consider a stroll along Main Street.

Venus Diner
5315 William Flynn Hwy. (Rt. 8)
Hampton Township

Looking for an honest-to-goodness classic diner? Look no more. This is a 1957 stainless-steel diner car with green curtains and waitresses in white
smocks. At Venus, you can rely on standard breakfast fare, served hot and cheap. Relax to a warm meal in one of the large cushioned booths or at the counter, which is the heart of this cozy diner car. The only exception to tradition here is Venus' Crow's Nest: two eggs fried inside your choice of toast over the grill, a local favorite that, for $2.70, sells like hotcakes.

724/443-2323; 5:30 a.m.-7 p.m. daily; breakfast all day; nonsmoking; cash only

Country Kitchen
371 Pittsburgh Road (Rt. 8)
Penn Township, Butler County

With an oversized Humpty Dumpty on the roof, this restaurant serves as a great landmark for travelers, but the famous $4.95 Gyro'n Eggs makes for an even
better breakfast stop. It's not clear if the egg-shaped man spawned the fairy-
tale interior of Country Kitchen, but one thing is for sure: Once inside, you'll think you've entered the seven dwarfs' wooded cottage. Sturdy oak chairs with green and tan-striped cushions line the front room; and the exterior awnings cast a storybook feel to the tables inside.

In addition to the distinctive gyro selections, including the much-loved Gyro'n Cheese omelet with home fries and toast for $5.50, you can indulge in a variety of muffins and pecan rolls. The Fat Greek or the Philly & Cheese omelets are two of the specialty selections, both for $5.75. But for truckers who frequent this roadside spot, it's simply the $4.75 special—eggs, home fries, toast and
coffee—served quick and always with a smile that keeps them coming back,
run after run.

Eppinger's Restaurant
1649 Perry Highway
Muddy Creek Township,
Butler County

Located near Moraine and McConnell's Mill state parks, this simple country restaurant, open 24 hours a day, is a favorite spot of outdoorsmen and
travelers. The open dining rooms provide ample booth, table and counter seating. Like other diners, Eppinger's offers delicious traditional breakfast fare, but be sure to order a stack of homemade buttermilk-pancakes. At $2.29 a stack, they're big, fluffy and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. A variety of omelets is also available, as well as a lighter menu that includes an egg, a helping of meat and a slice of toast for $1.89.

724/368-8383; open 24 hours daily; breakfast special (two eggs, bacon or sausage, home fries and toast for $2.99) is always available; breakfast served all day Mon.-Fri.; until 11:30 a.m. Sat. and Sun.; smoking/nonsmoking; cash/credit/debit
