Rise & Shine
NOT YOUR AVERAGE BREAKFAST

Billy's Roadhouse
10150 Old Perry Highway
McCandless Township

This hopping roadside bar scrubs up every Sunday morning when waffles and eggs replace cold beer from the night before. The warm oak interior is coupled with a loft that overlooks a mammoth moose head hanging on the wall of the dining area. Or, if you prefer, the outdoor patio offers a lovely view of the quiet, wooded landscape.

Creative menu selections, including a host of seafood options, are offered
in addition to eggs, potatoes and plate-sized pancakes. The crabmeat benedict—scrambled eggs served atop ham and a crabcake—served with home fries is worth every penny, at $8.99. If you've never had a lobster omelet, Billy's is the place to try it—the fresh Atlantic-lobster omelet is filled with mozzarella cheese and served with toast and home fries for $11.95.

Ugly Duckling
Gourmet Edibles
946 Western Ave., North Side

With the ambience of Victorian dining, this quiet locale offers a proper British high tea, by reservation, along with six-day-a-week classic breakfast fare. Lace tablecloths, Oriental rugs and delicate porcelain add to the serene, romantic feel of this unique spot in the heart of historic Allegheny West.

Brunch entrées at Ugly Duckling rotate on a weekly basis, but favorites include french toast with cream cheese and fruit filling and topped with fresh fruit, $6.50. Or, try the spiced egg cups wrapped in strips of bacon. Yogurt trifles, granola parfaits, scones and whole-wheat fruit rolls are an unusual twist on the traditional.

Quiet Storm Coffee House
5430 Penn Ave.
Friendship

You may be surprised to find that this funky, new-wave coffeehouse serves breakfast. But you'll probably be more surprised to learn that scrambled tofu with nutritional yeast can delight your palate, not to mention give you a morning dose of B-12.

Located on the edge of the Garfield/Friendship border, this café flaunts an array of distinctive, tasty vegetarian and vegan selections. Real eggs, cheese, milk and home fries are also available; however, the panini (a pressed Italian sandwich), prepared with tofu-scramble, tomato, spinach and mushrooms in a homemade garlic aioli, could very well turn any carnivore into a vegan. A spacious circular coffee bar with stool seating is located at the center of
the spacious dining area, where you can have an espresso or cappuccino with
your breakfast.

One weekday special includes the Frittata Primavera, a quiche-like dish loaded with veggies, topped with alfredo sauce and served with taters and toast, for $7. Other items include mashed taters, yogurt with fruit and granola, and the Take-out-Breakfast: an egg-and-cheese bagel with a small juice and coffee for $5. A must on your places-to-try list.
