Grand Opening

Grand Opening

Winner: Architectural Residence
Under 3,500 Square Feet

Left: Natural light flows into the redesigned home, thanks to a more open floor plan and semi-transparent walls.

Typical of Pittsburgh's century-old homes, the interior of this Friendship townhouse had been overly divided. Designer Gerard Damiani opened the floor plan, used contemporary materials and semi-translucent walls to meet the client's desire for an open living space and more light. "It's tiny, but there is a sense of a much greater space," the judges observed.

Walls became windows of light, and ceilings were opened to expose walkways above, replacing the closed floor plan that made the house feel cramped. Many decisions about materials were based on their environmental-friendliness, so the interiors include gypsum board, recycled plaster and bamboo flooring.

The judges added: "The amount of care and energy that went into this project, and how they overlaid old and new solutions, are impressive."
