Given the 40-year hiatus since the last new-construction condominiums broke ground in the Golden Triangle, it might be hard to imagine Pittsburghers buying up units faster than developers can build them. But that's exactly what's happening at 151 First Side-more than half of the 82 units sold before crews even raised a beam.
The virtual tour on 151's site makes it easy to picture yourself inside the 18-story building, with sweeping views of the Monongahela, downtown skyline and Station Square. Brett Malky, president of EQA Landmark Communities and partner in 151 First Side, says the site plays a role in the success, but there's more to the story: "Cities much smaller have seen a re-emergence of their downtown as a neighborhood. It's now Pittsburgh's turn."
First Side has attracted both young professionals and empty-nesters, relocating from Chicago, D.C. and L.A. "We are ecstatic," says Malky. "The majority of buyers are out-of-town urban dwellers moving to the city of Pittsburgh. We think that not only bodes well for our building, but also for the region."
