ALLEGHENY TRAIL ALLIANCE (ATA):

Coalition of seven trail organizations in Southwestern Pennsylvania and western Maryland currently building the Great Allegheny Passage, a 150-mile multiple-use rail-trail system from Cumberland, Md., to Pittsburgh. The Passage will link with the C & O Canal Towpath in Cumberland to provide a non-motorized, nearly level trail system from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. The Great Allegheny Passage is a segment of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. The ATA member trails are the Montour Trail, Three Rivers Heritage Trail, Steel Valley Trail, Youghiogheny River Trail North, Youghiogheny River Trail South, Allegheny Highlands Trail of Pennsylvania and Allegheny Highlands Trail of Maryland.

PW&S BIKE TRAIL:

26-mile trail including a 5.7-mile, steep grade length favored by mountain bikers, hikers, horses and snowmobiles. Organization develops and promotes hiking/biking trails converted from former railroad rights-of-way, usually along rivers and creeks, have minimal grade and few, if any, intersections with roads. Many are fully handicapped-accessible. Some allow for cross-country skiing in snowy weather, some permit horseback riding, some allow in-line skaters. Sponsor of Greenway Sojourn.

THREE RIVERS HERITAGE TRAIL:

The Three Rivers Heritage Trail, developed by Friends of the Riverfront, is a wonderful pedestrian trail and greenway system in the Pittsburgh region running for 21 miles along both sides of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers. It is an almost-complete public route for cyclists, walkers, runners and, in some places, rollerbladers. Through intense collaboration with community partners, government officials and a diverse volunteer base, our rivers and riverfronts have been transformed from industrial wastelands to international examples of environmental renewal.
