Pittsburgh provides a host of opportunities for its businesses: Local universities offer classes and small-business centers; government and private agencies support development. But oftentimes, our relationships are as vital to our success as other forms of more technical support.
Janet Maclaren and Bettina Flower, co-chairs of International Women's Association of Pittsburgh, have seen first-hand how women can become friends and then business partners. IWAP started in 1967 as a "Wives' Coffee" for international wives, but in 1993 it changed into what Maclaren calls a "great melting pot of an organization." Women from all over the world, including Pittsburgh, meet to learn about other cultures and embrace the city's diversity. The group acts as a support system for women in the area-it bridges the culture gap and literally "speaks the language" of international students and workers.
As you look over the hundreds of listings within these City Guide pages, note the diverse and opportunities that reside here in Pittsburgh. -Rachael Moss
