WQED
Multimedia is poised to be the premier public broadcaster in the
country and stands at the threshold of a new era. The organization
has made great strides since its darkest days of the early 1990s.
Mid-decade brought a new management team, a corporate streamlining,
fiscal controls, and a dedication to the
local community.
Today,
the fruits of those labors are seen in WQEDs locally produced
television and radio programming, publishing ventures, community
involvement and educational services that enhance and engage the
region. WQEDs programs also reach a national audience hungry
for programming that touches lives and tells Americas stories
through history, music
and cooking.
The
road that took WQED Multimedia to this point was a long and difficult
one. Through the hard work and dedication of the board of directors,
community advisory board, members and supporters, foundations,
underwriters, the corporate community and staff, we have emerged
as a lean, strong and fiscally sound organization with the multimedia
strengths needed to serve the people of southwestern Pennsylvania.
In
this report to the community, the first in many years, we provide
a glimpse into the diverse activities of WQED Multimedia. From
Rick Sebaks Pittsburgh History Series to T.
J. Lubinskys
music programs and Chris Fennimores cooking shows, we
are preserving our local history and national music heritage
for
future generations. OnQ magazine and host Stacy Smith
focus on the region every night, and WQED fm89.3s Jim
Cunningham and radio personalities serve the regions
diverse arts and culture community. PITTSBURGH magazine
is the regions
window to the lifestyles of our region. Our Education Resource
Center works with educators in the community to prepare our
children for a productive life. Our relationships with community
organizations
provide exposure to hundreds of non-profits that improve the
community through the arts, education, and community and childrens
services.
Today, WQED Multimedia is positioned to grow and become the best public
broadcaster in the country.
Yours in progress,
Herbert Bennett Conner
