WQED’s unique capabilities and its five-decade history of community involvement make it a natural partner in initiatives to improve the region.

Throughout the years, WQED has partnered with community organizations and educational institutions to meet their needs and serve the region. WQED regularly hosts community forums in its studios to preview upcoming programming, which usually include a panel discussion and networking opportunities for other non-profit organizations. Past forums have included caring for older family members, health care topics, political debates and workforce development.

Special programming topics covered on WQED’s OnQ magazine also have a component in Pittsburgh magazine and the WQED website. Conversely, magazine topics and articles receive coverage on television, radio and the web.

WQED is able to develop a television program on a topic such as care giving, partner with a local group, hold a community forum in the WQED studios, and create a lasting partnership and network for any number of social service organizations, educational institutions, and community nonprofits that would otherwise not have the resources to gain much needed visibility.

Membership and volunteer support is crucial to fulfilling WQED’s mission. More than 47,000 members of WQED Multimedia annually show their support through generous contributions, and more than 600 volunteers assist in activities including television and radio pledge periods, events and membership drives.

WQED’s Community Advisory Board (CAB) is an active group of over 30 community representatives who provide input to the WQED Board of Directors. Twice a year, the CAB travels to counties throughout the region to host a WQED event or partner with an arts organization.
