The bass Liang Li was born in Shanxi, China. He studied at the Music Conservatory in Tianjin and at the Music Academy in Peking. He has won prices at numerous singing competitions in Asia, as well as the 3rd prize at the Internationalen Musikwettbewerb der ARD.
2001-2006 Liang Li was a principal at the Staatsoper Hannover where his roles included King Marke in Tristan und Isolde, Ferrando in Il Trovatore, Trulove in The Rake’s Progress, Colline in La Bohème, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Ramfis in Aida, Curio in Guilio Cesare In Egitto, Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Arkel in Pelleas et Mélisande, Lorenzo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Masetto in Don Giovanni, Timur in Turandot and Europeras by John Cage.
Liang Li is a much sought after concert singes and he regularly appears in venues and festivals throughout Europe and Asia. His repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem and Missa per Rossini, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Bruckner’s Mass No. 3 in F Minor. His recordings include Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem, Fasolt in Das Rheingold and Fafner in Siegfried.
In the autumn of 2006, Liang Li joined the ensemble at the Staatsoper Stuttgart where his roles include King Marke in Tristan und Isolde, Ramfis in Aida, Gremin in Eugene Onegin, Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Oroveso in Norma, Cardinal de Brogni in La Juive and Arkel in Pelleas et Mélisande.
Other recent engagements have included Arkel in Pelleas et Mélisande at the Edinburgh Festival and at the Wiener Festwochen, King Marke in Tristan und Isolde at the Opéra de Montpellier, Daland in Der Fliegende Holländer, Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Philip II in Don Carlo and King Marke in Tristan und Isolde at the Theater Basel, Colline in La Bohème, as well as Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro at the New National Theatre in Tokyo, and Fasolt in Das Rheingold at the Tiroler Festspiele in Erl and at the Santander Festival.
Liang Li’s engagements during the 2009-2010 season include Ramfis in Aida, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Daland in Der Fliegende Holländer, Gremin in Eugene Onegin and Arkel in Pelleas et Mélisande at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, Banco in Macbeth at Nationaltheater Mannheim, Verdi’s Requiem in Basel and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl.
Future assignments include King Marke in Tristan und Isolde at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as well as at the Staatsoper Dresden, Gurnemanz in Parsifal at the Theater Basel, Daland in Der Fliegende Holländer at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl, and concerts of Verdi’s Requiem with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
