Violist Isaias Zelkowicz was born in San Jose, Costa Rica. He joined the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1978, coming here after eight years with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Ontario. Besides his orchestral work there, he played recitals and much chamber music, as well as making CBC recordings. Zelkowicz earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at The Juilliard School, where his teachers included Ivan Galamian, Dorothy DeLay and Robert Mann of the Juilliard String Quartet. At Indiana University in Bloomington he was awarded a teaching fellowship and did further graduate work with the renowned pedagogue Josef Gingold.
Zelkowicz is a member on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University. He lives in Mt. Lebanon with his wife Joan, a violinist. In his spare time he enjoys drawing and photography.
