FUSE@PSO: Beethoven + Coldplay
Presented by: Pittsburgh Symphony
A mash-up of Beethoven's famous "Eroica" Symphony with songs from the Coldplay catalog, from A Rush of Blood to the Head to Mylo Xyloto. FUSE@PSO Creative Director and conductor Steve Hackman expertly combines the two, culminating in a rousing rendition of Beethoven's Finale: Allegro molto carrying the Coldplay anthem Viva la Vida. Happy Hour at 5 pm, concert at 6:30.

Music 101: Adam Liu, "When East Meets West"

Villegas Plays Rodrigo
Presented by: Pittsburgh Symphony
Guitarist Pablo Villegas returns, alongside the debut of fellow Spaniard, conductor Gustavo Gimeno. Villegas performs Rodrigo's Fantasia Para un Gentilhombre, a piece rich in haunting melodies and Spanish folk dances. Gimeno conducts music from two ballets -- Stravinsky's Jeu de cartes and Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe. The program begins with Academy Award-nominated music from "There Will Be Blood," written by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood.

The Rite of Spring

Considered scandalous at its 1913 premiere in Paris, Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring is now considered one of the greatest works of the 20th century. Principal harpist Gretchen Van Hoesen will play Ginastera's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, and the orchestra gives the Pittsburgh premiere of Edu Lobo's Suite Popular Brasileira.

Tao, Gershwin and Strauss

Music 101: Chad Winkler, "It Starts With Family"

The Complete Ma Vlast

Comprising six tone poems, Smetana's Ma Vlast is a series of journeys through Czech landscapes and legends. The PSO's first performance of the complete cycle will be led by the Czech Republic's most renowned conductor, Jiři Bělohlavek. The second tone poem, The Moldau, evokes the river from its headwaters, past landscapes, a wedding party, a hunt and even water nymphs, as it flows to Prague.

A Waltz Tradition

Coronation Mass, Unfinished Symphony & Emperor Concerto

Mozart's Coronation Mass, Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and Beethoven's Emperor Concerto were nicknamed (not by their composers) to suit the character of the works. Pianist Yulianna Avdeeva is featured in Beethoven's final "Emperor" concerto. The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and a quartet of vocal soloists join Manfred Honeck in Mozart's Mass in C major, "Coronation."
