Indigo Girls with the Pittsburgh Symphony

Amy Ray and Emily Saliers — better known as the Indigo Girls — perform with the PSO conducted by Robert Bernhardt. Twenty years after their debut CD, the Indigo Girls still bring sublime harmonies to their heartfelt catalog of songs. Drawing from 14 original studio albums, Ray and Saliers will perform their classics, such as "Power of Two," "Closer to Fine," "Virginia Woolf," "Kid Fears" and many more.

Disney FANTASIA
Presented by: Pittsburgh Symphony
The PSO provides live accompaniment to scenes from Walt Disney's original Fantasia (1940) and Disney's Fantasia 2000 -- with excerpts from Beethoven's Symphony Nos. 5 and 6, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, Debussy's Clair de Lune and Stravinsky's Firebird suite. The music of Ponchielli, Dukas and Elgar is also illustrated in these special cinematic concerts conducted by Ward Stare.

The Sound of a Modern Symphony
Presented by: Pittsburgh Symphony
At the request of Principal Cellist Anne Martindale Williams, the PSO commissioned opera composer Jake Heggie ("Dead Man Walking") to write an unusual concerto for cello, voice and orchestra. It is based on a text by Laura Morefield, written during the poet's losing battle with cancer. Mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, who won the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, makes her PSO debut. Then, guest conductor Michael Francis showcases the expressive power, versatility and virtuosity of the PSO in Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra.

Dance and Flight

Principal Bassoonist Nancy Goeres will enchant in the Pittsburgh premiere of David Ludwig's "Pictures from the Floating World." Debussy's languid impressionistic style will be heard in the opening work, "Iberia." Spanish conductor Juanjo Mena also brings dances from his home country and Argentina in suites from De Falla's opera "La Vida Breve," and Ginastera's rhythmic and passionate ballets "Panambi" and "Estancia."

BeethovenFest: The Immortal

Some say that Beethoven had difficulty writing melodies, yet his Violin Concerto abounds with beautiful tunes, each as serene and good-humored as the next. Violinist Christian Tetzlaff solos with Manfred Honeck conducting. Beethoven once again redefined the symphonic form through the inclusion of a chorus in his monumental Symphony No. 9, ending with the Ode to Joy, the deaf composer's celebration of life and universal brotherhood. The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and a quartet of vocal soloists join the PSO.

Mahler's "Titan" (Season Finale)
Presented by: Pittsburgh Symphony
Grammy-winning pianist Yefim Bronfman performs Liszt's demanding Piano Concerto #2. Mahler’s Symphony #1 begins almost inaudibly, includes a parody of "Frere Jacques" as a funeral march, and ends in a blaze of glory. The program opens with Alan Fletcher's third concerto for the PSO's woodwind principals, this time featuring Principal Oboist Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida.
