Carnegie Museum's dinosaurs

Story of Carnegie’s paleontology department and the dinosaur display there. This is one of the best collections in the world of dinosaurs from the Jurassic period, including the very first specimen of the T-Rex.

Betty Hill takes care of the collection of dinosaur bones not on display. Ms. Hill catalogues the items and tells of their unique history.

An Aspinwall resident found this Mastadon tusk several decades ago.

Meadowcroft Rockshelter Native American site

Native Americans, and later, Europeans, camped in the Avella region for more than 16,000 years. This ancient campsite is called the Meadowcroft Rock Shelter, and excavation of the region began in 1973. Members of the excavation team speak about the region’s history and the first humans in the area.

A documentary film was made about the excavation of the region, and the painstaking archeological process is discussed.

Oram’s Donut Shop in Beaver County has been around since 1938. Customers and store workers praise the tasty treats and speak about the store’s history. We also get a behind-the-scenes look at donut production.

Nicholas Coffee

Nicholas Coffee, in Market Square downtown, has been roasting coffee and functioning as a miniature coffee plant since 1919. The history of the family-owned business is revealed, and owners talk about the coffee beans they sell.

J.H. Shoop and Sons

J.H. Shoop and Sons is a five-generation family-owned men’s clothing store in Freeport, PA. The store offers clothing, as well as a number of unusual vintage items representing the store’s and W.PA’s history.

The third floor of Shoop’s stores an accumulation of clothing from the past 120 years. And in the basement, a number of other vintage items from the store’s past, including an old safe, are shown.

Fayette County beehive coke ovens

In Fayette County, a small town called Shofe is home to old coke ovens left over from the late 19th century. They are arguably the best-preserved coke ovens in the US, and we tour the site as we hear about the coal- and coke-making industry.

In Smock, PA, another row of coke ovens remains. Immigrant stone masons constructed these oven in a special design. During the depression, these abandoned coke ovens were used for housing.

Standard Horse Nail Co

In New Brighton, PA, there is a family-owned business called Standard Horse Nail Co., which was founded in 1872. Although horse nails are no longer used, the company still exists and makes certain types of engine parts. One family member displays some of the store’s vintage items, including old ledgers, and tells of the store’s history.

A visit to the factory shows the production of the company’s products.

Homer Laughlin China Co.'s Fiestaware

In Newell, WV, a company originally known as Laughlin Bros. was founded in 1871. Today they make china and dinnerware, including the popular dinnerware called Fiestaware. Workers show the detailed process of making hollowware and other Fiesta pieces.

Twice a year, customers come to the warehouse sale at Homer Laughlin China Co., and we see the number of people who have traveled from all over the country to collect their favorite Fiesta pieces.

Carnegie Library, Braddock

The Carnegie Library in Braddock was built in the late 1880’s. Slated for demolition in the 1970’s, community members stepped in to save this beautiful building. A number of patrons tell of their favorite moments visiting the library. The library’s executive director talks about the library’s unique history, its restoration, and its continued operations.

The library houses the "first" Carnegie Hall ever built. It has been restored and is a spectacular performance room.

Cascade Theater, Warner Brothers first

In Lawrence Co., in New Castle, an old building built in the 1880’s is the site of the Warner Brothers’ first permanent movie theater, called the Cascade Theater. We tour the site, which has been gutted, as we learn about Warner Bros and motion picture history, and the effort to save the building and develop the site as a new theater.

Harris Theater movie posters

In downtown Pittsburgh, the Harris Theater used to be a "provocative" Art Cinema Theater in the 1940’s and 1950’s. It is now owned by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and shows art films. The building, however, housed a number of old art films, and preservationists talk about the role of film posters and advertising in promoting films.

Old Newsreels

In Greene County, PA, a resident shot a collection of old newsreels showing the town in the 1910’s and 1920’s. He showed them at his local theater to attract patrons who could see themselves on the "silver screen." The local fire company now owns the newsreels, but local teachers and civic leaders use the films in various ways, including using them as teaching tools and showing them in the local Waynesburg cinema. This segment shows a selection of these clips and discusses their historical relevance.

Ligonier Beach

The Gallo family, of Westmoreland Country, opened a giant swimming pool in 1925. It was known as Ligonier Beach, and today it continues to operate. Patrons talk about the attractions of the pool, and many of the older patrons discuss coming here as children. The Gallos, who sold the pool in 1997, visit the pool to discuss its history, and to recall the pool’s opening. They also discuss its history of great entertainment, including Dean Martin and other popular entertainers.

Sewickley Train Station

In Sewickley, PA, there is a building that was originally a train station, and then became an American Legion post. Throughout the decades, it has been a site for a number of important cultural and community events for the Black community.

Greater Pittsburgh Airport

The Greater Pittsburgh Airport was torn down in 1999, but in the new Pittsburgh International Airport, there is an Alexander Calder mobile/sculpture saved from the original airport. The mobile is titled "Pittsburgh," and its history and design is discussed.

The Belt System of road markers

Allegheny County has used a roadway system called the Belt System since 1950, however, many residents don’t understand it. The system is intended to direct drivers to alternate routes that surround the city. Various Pittsburgh residents discuss their experiences using —or not understanding — the Belt System.
