Get Your GAME ON! with WQED!

WQED is offering a variety of opportunities in gaming for
students, educators, and parents!

For Students in Grades 5-8

Playing games is a way to learn! WQED will host a free, Game ON! Workshop on February 9 for middle school students who want create a new game for national competition. We're partnering with PBS, E-Line Media, and the Pittsburgh chapter of the International Game Developers Association to to offer an awesome day of game design and development. You'll get the tools you need to enter the 2013 National STEM Video Game Challenge, too! Check out last year's national winners from Cranberry Township, who won for their game Archers and Aliens!

About the Game ON! workshop:

The 2013 Game ON! workshop will run from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, located in downtown Pittsburgh. Students will learn about the history of gaming and how games are created, receive information about entering the National STEM Video Game Challenge, and design and create their own games.

This event is FREE. Snacks, soft drinks, and a pizza dinner will be provided. Parents, please sign your child in between 11:30 and 11:45 am and leave an emergency number where you can be reached, then return at 6:00 pm to sign out your gamer. We look forward to seeing you on February 9!

For Teachers of Students in Grades 5-8

Playing games is a way for kids to share what they know about a variety of topics! WQED will be hosting a free teacher professional development workshop in the spring of 2013, made possible by Chevron. Teachers will be given research, video assets, training, and supplementary materials for teaching games in the classroom as well coaching on games as assessment tools. Act 48 credit provided.

For Parents – Gaming, Education and Parenting

Tune in for the first episode of iQ: smartparent, focused on gaming and your child! Learn about the challenges and benefits of games in children’s lives, with a special emphasis on games in schools. Watch WQED-TV on February 7 at 8:00 pm for “Learning With Games”; this episode will also be aired on February 10 at 3:00 pm. Learning With Games is made possible in part by Chevron.
