About Us

WQED is your source for high-quality, educational multimedia for all ages. Our education initiative, iQ: smartmedia, is taking kids places, helping them read, count, and share. In order to maximize every child’s potential, iQ: smartmedia is bringing our region cutting-edge educational resources for kids, families, and teachers. Our goal is to reimagine the way media is used for education.

Our vision and strategy?

CORE + 4

CORE

WQED broadcasts nearly 70 hours of kids’ educational programming each week, reaching more than 250,000 kids and parents. All free of charge. Through television alone, we serve 82% of the region’s children ages 2-8, and we also train more than 1,000 educators and impact or engage at least 30,000 students – every year. We also provide a 24/7 portal to online games and apps that move the needle on children’s learning.

EARLY LITERACY

WQED is committed to expanding the use of multimedia learning tools to strengthen literacy skills for kids in Pre-K to grade 3 and beyond. Our annual PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest is one of the largest and most robust in the nation and we’ve provided “Digital Labs” to libraries and community-based organizations to create technology-rich learning spaces for children in underserved neighborhoods. Our efforts to equip early childhood educators with resources and curricula continue to grow and succeed.

STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

Through innovative partnerships, WQED is able to inspire interest and achievement in STEM subjects for students in grades 5-10. Programs like Design Lives Here, Game ON!, and the SciGirls Summit encourage middle- and high-school students to explore critical subjects like engineering and computer programming, while introducing them to professional mentors and real-world STEM workplaces in southwestern Pennsylvania.

DIGITAL FLUENCY

WQED seeks to build the capacity of parents and educators to find and use age-appropriate media as learning and assessment tools. We’ve developed a broadcast series for parents, called iQ: smartparent, that empowers parents with new knowledge, tools, and abilities to successfully guide their children in the use of digital media and technology. Our SuperTeachers are an elite corps of early childhood educators who develop innovative curricula based on PBS media assets for young learners. During the 2012-2013 school year, they trained more than 1,600 early childhood professionals statewide on the adoption of these resources – focusing on math, health and wellness, students with special needs, and more – with an estimated impact on nearly 48,000 students across Pennsylvania.

INNOVATION

WQED continuously explores unique intersections between multimedia, education, and digital fluency. Through robust community partnerships, we are able to connect high-quality educational media from PBS and other sources to in-person and online learning opportunities for children and families; innovative projects like iQ Zoo and iQ Kids Radio are just two products of this approach.
