Not a Hummingbird

Here’s a moth that’s the same size and color as a hummingbird and it uses the same hovering technique.

The hummingbird clearwing moth (Hemaris thysbe) even migrates — another bird-like trait.

Steve Gosser captured this moth sipping wild bergamot.

When you glance at your garden look carefully.  That hummingbird might be a moth.

    1. It could be a moth. There are a couple of kinds that hover and are called hummingbird moths.

  1. My grandmother and I saw these odd little creatures in our garden in Courtland Ontario last year. We thought they were hummingbirds until we really had a look at it. They move just like a hummingbird but yes the big antenna and insect like bottom really threw us off ! Haven’t seen them since!
