 Puccini's Madama Butterfly Cio-Cio San's (Maria Luigia Borsi) open heart and trusting nature are the reasons that Pinkerton (Bryan Hymel) should love her, and the reasons that you'll weep at the end of the opera. The young Japanese woman, nicknamed Butterfly, gives up her family and her religion to be with Pinkerton. Pinkerton gives up nothing, and promptly leaves - returning three years later with his American wife, leaving the young Butterfly mortally devastated.
