Matt Murchison Mutiny
Music without boundaries and entertainment without pandering. The show will include virtuosic instrumental grooves by composer, arranger, and founder Matthew Murchison, as well as a mix of jazz, Latin, and classical music. Help us overthrow the average concert! Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Milly didn't know life with Adam would include six rowdy brothers-in-law as roommates. Now, her plans to marry them off may backfire when the rambunctious bachelors kidnap rather than court their brides-to-be. Based on the MGM film, this show features daredevil dancing and the songs "Wonderful, Wonderful Day," "Love Never Goes Away" and "Sobbin' Women."
The Sounds of Growth
The Reed II Trio's first Pittsburgh tour promises a night of music that will be enjoyable for the whole family. Admission is free, but donations will further REED III's musical performances and repertoire. Reed III's oboe, clarinet, and bassoon performers have had success as concerto competition winners, artists in residence, and professional orchestral players.
In a recording career that spans almost three decades and 23 albums, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Kenny G has grafted elements of R&B, pop and Latin to a jazz foundation solidifying his reputation as the premiere artist in contemporary "smooth jazz." PSO Resident Conductor Lawrence Loh leads the orchestra.
Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival
The 2nd annual Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival will feature premieres, emerging artists and cutting-edge filmmaking technologies. Equal parts innovation lab and storytelling hub, the event will screen 60 films from around the globe, including the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Turkey, Australia, and France. Additonal programming includes Q&As with 22 local, national and international filmmakers filmmakers, industry discussions and social networking events.
Chaplin's "One A.M." & "The Rink"
Pianist, arranger, and composer Tom Roberts performs his original scores for two of Chaplin's Mutual masterpieces: One A.M, and The Rink. Roberts used musical styles and genres appropriate to 1916. In addition to ragtime, foxtrots, tangos, and waltzes, he drew from the French vals musette and Brazilian choros styles. Author/choreographer/mime Dan Kamen calls them "wonderful, knowing, witty scores." One audience member described the experience of watching the films as "like being in a dream and entering a new, magical world."
Art Happening at The Inn
Jeffrey Young & Paul Pinto of thingNY present "Jeff Young and Paul Pinto, Patriots, Run for Public Office on a Platform of Swift and Righteous Immigration Reform, Lots of Jobs, and a Healthy Environment." Young & Pinto wrote the text, music, and scored the half-hour parody piece for their own voices, violin, percussion, a turntable, and lots of cardboard boxes. The Gemini Duo performs contemporary works for horn & violin.
Pittsburgh Piano Teachers Association Scholarship Winners Recital
2013 Pittsburgh Piano Teachers Association scholarship winner Connor Doran will be featured along with previous winner Alvin Zhu and Continuing Support winners Ben Grove and Julian Cox. Free admission.
In Bloom Garden Tour
This is a self-guided tour of some of Butler county’s spectacular gardens and is a fundraiser for the symphony.
Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration
A new symphonic project celebrating rock icon Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead. This orchestral adventure features Garcia's original compositions as well as classic interpretations of timeless standards that were hallmarks of Garcia's shows. Renowned vocalist/guitarist Warren Haynes collaborates with the PSO, lending his soul-soaked, introspective blend of rock, blues, R&B and jazz to Garcia's masterworks.
