Comala is a a concert cantata for voices and chamber ensemble by Mexican 2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon. Comala features new-music soprano Tony Arnold and Pittsburgh tenor Rob Frankenberry with guitarist Dieter Hennings, percussionist Stuart Gerber, saxophonist Jan Baker, and the Eastman BroadBand. Conductor Federico Garcia also premieres one of his own works, and leads music by John Arrigo-Nelson and Michael Fiday.
Ted Pappas directs and choreographs a brand-new staging of Sondheim's musical comedy Company. The show evokes the excitement of Manhattan where eligible bachelor, Robert, is surrounded by five married couples and three single women. Robert will be played by Pittsburgh native Jim Stanek, whose Broadway credits include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Rivals, Little Women, Lestat, and The Story of My Life.
The Music of John Williams
PSO Resident Conductor Lawrence Loh leads the music of John Williams. The winner of five Academy Awards, Williams has written music for Lincoln, Jaws, Schindler’s List, E.T., Superman, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Saving Private Ryan, The Accidental Tourist, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Born on the Fourth of July, the first three Harry Potter movies and the unforgettable themes for Star Wars and all four Indiana Jones films.
Emmanuel Chabrier's L'Etoile
In Chabrier's opera, King Ouf the First disguises himself and goes in search of a subject to execute. Laoula, the daughter of a monarch, arrives in town unaware that she has been sent to marry the King. Unfortunately, Laoula falls in love with Lazuli, a poor peddler, who insults the incognito king and becomes a candidate for impalement. However, the king's astrologer intervenes, forcing his majesty to make a big decision. Brian Garman conducts, Gregory Lehane directs.
Freya String Quartet with Symbiotic Chamber Orchestra - Electric
Freya plugs in their instruments and joins forces with the Symbiotic Chamber Orchestra for Ingram Marshall’s Entrada, Steve Reich’s Different Trains, and Sean Neukom's The Ghost and Mister Able, a work that blurs the lines of what is considered pop or classical.
Spanish Harlem Orchestra
Founded in 2000, the Grammy-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra has established itself as a standard bearer of contemporary Latin music. Directed by world-renowned pianist, arranger, and producer Oscar Hernández, the thirteen-member all-star ensemble has reintroduced the classic sounds of New York City Salsa to music lovers worldwide.
Strike Duo members Jeffery Meyer (piano) and Paul Vaillancourt (percussion) have been described as "exceptionally fine players both individually and in tandem." The'll play Chen Yi's folk-inspired China West Suite, Mario Davidovsky's electroacoustic classic Synchronisms No. 6, Brooke Joyce's Sacred Trees, Marc Mellits' Tight Sweater (Remix), Eric Moe's Cross Chop (for solo drum set), and Jim David's Duo Toccata. Co-presented with Andy Warhol Museum.
Robert Burns Supper
Burns is Scotland's national poet. Hear recitations of his Selkirk Grace, Address to the Haggis, Immortal Memory, and more, with Scottish music and authentic fare including Jamison Farm's renowned lamb, a whiskey tasting, silent auction, and souvenir pictures. Performances feature the MacDonald Pipe Band, singer Diane Rudolph, Highland dancers, and Scottish tenor Robert Murdoch. Scottish-born business Gordon MacDonald Reid is the emcee. (Black tie or full Highland dress.)
PB&J - May I Have This Dance?
Chatham Baroque's Peanut Butter & Jam Sessions are designed for preschool children and their accompanying adults. Based on a model developed by the Linton Chamber Music Series in Cincinnati, PB&J is hosted by certified Kindermusik teacher Lynda Wingerd, and encourages young children to become active and enthusiastic listeners through music, dance and games. Chatham Baroque performs live, often with guest artists.
Nico Muhly's Dark Sisters
After a raid on her polygamous family's compound, sister-wife Eliza embarks on a quest for self-discovery. Her journey is burdened by tragedy and strife, in a work that "evokes the jittery buzz of reality television." (New York Times). Pittsburgh Opera's resident artists star in Muhly's 2010 opera conducted by Glenn Lewis.

Guest Conductor Ian Hobson leads the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra in Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin, Mozart's Piano Concerto #23 in A Major, K 488, featuring Mr. Hobson, and Beethoven's Symphony #1 in C Major.
Fields of Praise
The Pittsburgh Camerata pays tribute to former Artistic Director Gayle Kirkwood (1985-1995) with this concert of works by the Gabrielis (both Andrea and Giovanni), Sergei Rachmaninoff, Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, and “Fern Hill” by Richard Corigliano.
