The Musical Conquest of the New World When it came to music in the Americas, the British and Spanish imperial campaigns spread beauty, not destruction. Mexican and South American cathedral archives contain many jewels composed in the Spaniish late Renaissance style of Morales and Victoria. Choral music written in North America was much more tied to the British cathedral tradition. Composers such as Leo Sowerby and Healey Willan developed a distinctively American style without fully relinquishing their "old country" roots. 03/03/2013
